My computer won't do emoticons any more, else I'd have put a smiley face up. Should I be worried about this?

Absolutely, McTag. From this, all we'll see an inexorable decline in English texting skills. It'll spread to writing, then speech and we'll end up grunting and signaling.

@JTT,

Americans seem to need emoticons since they can't do subtlety or irony.

(emoticon here- you choose)

btw JTT, what is the connection between you and Debra Law? Puzzling, when folks don't fill in (or out) their profiles.

AGREED, as to failure to fill out profiles.

Humor and irony have caused too much damage
by misinterpretation; one needs to observe caution.

@JTT,

Then I will have to reassign both of your genders forthwith. Genders assumed by me, of course. I always thought JTT sounded male, and the name Debra is kind of misleading you must admit.

@JTT,
What I'm interested to know is if you're American JTT. I can't quite figure that one out.

I think that the couple are both Americans.

@spendius,
I got that Debra is for sure and I've noticed that JTT, you speak and write like an American - but oh lordy- you make no bones about taking us to task for things.
Not that anything you say isn't true - it is (in my opinion)- it's just that I seldom have read any positive thoughts you have about America as a country or Americans as people which must be very conflicting if that's where you grew up and live and your friends and family members are American.

Care to comment?

I think it's sickening the way in which Americans go on about their country, Aidan, and it surely doesn't need any further boosting from me.

Having said that, the USA is a fine country, a beautiful country and the people are a fine bunch too but the country has some deep flaws and it has committed a large number of egregious wrongs against many of the peoples of the world. It's far past time that everyone recognized this and spoke against it.

People should not have to die simply to assuage the rapacious greed of the USA.

@JTT,
Amen! Not only greed, but the mismanagement of many organizations that includes all government levels and commerce.

What has happened during the past decade were all warning signs we failed to heed; from over-spending, increasing debt, and pretty much getting sloppy with money management and our lives.

We all know why Rome fell; we are in the throes of repeating it.

@ehBeth,
I'll guess both male, but this is, as usual, not my business.

I'm not all that amused by obfuscation, but I suppose it has it's place.

I might even guess it's one person. And if so, so what?

I take from either of them the points that clarify anything for me.

Pure tongue in cheek, folks. Debra's obviously much too bright a person for any such union to have ever taken place.

Back to your soaps.

My pet peeve is the abstruse use of assuage when slake was the primary meaning.

Obfuscatory ribaldry aside, hopefully foreign and domestic policy is on the improve.

@oolongteasup,
If assuage is abstruse, Oolongteasup, then how were you able to discern the primary meaning?

But point taken; slake may well have been a better choice.

How about gratify. Slake is hardly psychological. There's mollify too. Soothe.
