So since a knife is just as effective

It is not "just" as effective. It is merely effective enough that a killer can put it to good use if they don't have a gun.

Killing people is something that is easily managed without a gun, as thousands of years of human history has shown.

Guns are more effective, but all the extra effectiveness is just overkill when the bar is so low to begin with.

parados wrote:
why is a simple knife not enough for self defense?

Because any limit on self defense runs headlong into Strict Scrutiny, and there is no valid reason to prevent people from having guns.

parados wrote:
Why do you need a gun

Need doesn't apply to me. I'm an American. If I choose to have a gun, I have the right to have one.

Jumping off a bridge is usually pretty fatal. There is that whole "impact with the water" thing.

That must be why there are no cliff divers or Olympic high divers that are currently living.

I doubt Olympic diving approaches the height of a large bridge.

I believe cliff diving is extremely dangerous. And the divers train (and strive) to hit the water at a safe angle.

He should end the "gun show loophole" to force people who buy guns at a gun show or through private sales and online shopping to have a background check: 92% of Americans favor this position per Gallup, while PPP puts support at 76%.

That can only be because the words "background check" have a magical significance.

Background checks can be useful if they are not abused.

Give criminals easy and cheap access to guns, get some home invasions.
Restrict access, reduce the frequency to the vanishing point.

@MontereyJack,

Why not enforce existing laws and remove guns from criminals hands?

An armed society of law abiding citizens is a polite society - criminals don't thrive in a polite society.

Obama's Utopian liberal society is far from polite... criminals thrive in a democratic society.

@oralloy,
The question should be:

Behind which door is someone more likely to be shot to death...even if there never is a "home invasion."

Right. Like Afghanistan and Somalia.

Whatever reasons the leadership of the south gave for trying to break away from the union is beside the point just as I am sure Obama and his whole administration know that a ban on so call assault rifles will not save one life in the future whatever the nonsense they are putting out for the benefits of such a ban.

Politicians say and claimed anything needed to get the support they needed to do what they wish to do and the connections to the real facts are mostly remote.

In any case the institution of slavery in any of the states where is already existed were in zero danger in the year 1861.

Well...that made almost no sense, but I guess it must have made you feel good to type it.

In any case, thanks for the chance to make my point again.

One door leads to a home where there are no guns...and one to a home where there are guns...

...so I ask again: In which home is a shooting more likely to happen.

Lemme give you a hint, H2O, because I realize it must be a tough question for you to resolve: It is much, much, much more likely that a shooting will occur in the home where there are guns.

I hope that hint helped!

@MontereyJack,

MJ, you're proving yourself to be more ignorant with each new post.

Afghanistan and Somalia live under different rules.

We Americans live in a constitutional republic under the rule of law.

I'm sure you are aware of the difference, but I'm also sure you will choose to ignore it.

Having to confront actual facts would be a bit too much for you to cope with, wouldn't it?

Freaks have been known to act that way, from time to time.

Nice try, Bill...but no cigar.

You said that the right to own slaves under states laws was never in danger. The Declaration of Secession of several of the states that seceded says there was that danger.

Here again is one of them:
Mississippi:

Tthe momentous step which our State has taken of dissolving its connection with the government of which we so long formed a part, it is but just that we should declare the prominent reasons which have induced our course.
Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin.
That we do not overstate the dangers to our institution, a reference to a few facts will sufficiently prove.

So you are wrong on that account.

Why not just man up to it and acknowledge you were wrong.
