@parados,
The irony about nuclear weapons is that new words came into being after its invention; "mutually assured destruction" or MAD. Only humans are capable of such foolishness.

Enough hand guns will result in the same use of those words.

@oralloy,
I've looked at a few photographs oralloy and I know a little about the state of the industrial arts and the insignificant cost of transportation/unit when the unit is compact and large numbers are involved.

I would guess $200 topside. To manufacture. And I've heard of $4,000 retail. Marketing costs, to include payments to political parties and members of political parties, executive salaries and bonuses and profit for shareholders and retailers will make up the bulk of the difference.

I remember long, long ago being astounded on being told the manufactured cost of a Sten gun. That's a short barreled lead spraying machine carried on a shoulder sling. It was something like 5 for £1. And at the time the average worker's weekly wage was about £10.

And if it makes sense to buy parts for assembly from the cheapest places, such as S.E. Asia and S America, for a whole range of mechanical products it is unlikely to have escaped the notice of gun manufacturers.

I'm not saying that these guns are manufactured abroad. I am asking you gun experts whether you know they are not. I don't know. I'm just asking.

Sure they do: Enact proper defenses.

How were those volunteer firemen---one of whom was a policemen--supposed to protect themselves from that killer?

These deaths were as horrible as those of the children--these are the people who dedicate themselves to helping and protecting the rest of us.

We have mass shootings going on regularly--and it is insane not to better regulate and control firearms. The more guns there are, the easier it becomes for anyone to get their hands on one. The man who murdered these fireman was not only a convicted felon, he apparently had a long history of mental illness.

There should be a way of tracing the ownership of all guns.

@firefly,
"They" want it both ways; add more police to schools so they can get killed too!

A police with a gun in his holster will not be able to protect anyone; including himself from somebody with a rifle with scope.

@firefly,
It is a muddle ff.

The NRA's position it seems to me is a pragmatic one. It is that there will be no significant restrictions. The assault weapons are merely the first trench. If that can't be stormed then there's no chance for the rest of the stuff which I think is around 300 million less 4 million = 296 million. Even if it is stormed the last trench is impossible.

Hence the NRA offered alternatives. A complete ban being not a factor. So the cost per life saved is the only game worth serious attention. And the cost of the suggestions I've seen offered is substantial and necessarily comes off other budgets unless a budget surplus is available which I gather is far from the case.

Hand-wringing and gestures of compassion seem to be selling more guns in proportion as they are thought to be influential. If nothing comes of it all then the function of the hand-wringing and compassionate gestures is to put more guns into circulation and provide more money for marketing, salaries and bonuses and payments to political parties and members of them and lobbyists who operate in those regions where restaurants and wine bars proliferate.

It should be borne in mind that the cost of the education of the dead victims is lost and the treatment of the injured ones must be very substantial if it is true that there 100,000 per year. So also the costs of investigations and legal cases resulting and the undertakers will come in for considerable business.

If I were to go into the detail I would guess the total cost to be at least $200 billion and increasing as gun ownership grows.

Keep in mind that a fair degree of precision is usually desired.

It depends on how precise and well-made you want it.

There are plenty of AR-15 type guns for under $1,000. You get what you pay for of course.

Well, I for one have no idea. But others might know.

There are dead children as a result of an obviously unwell person who never got the help he needed.

There is. Get the serial number, ask the manufacturer where it was initially sold, and follow the 4473 trail.

Whether they are unwell persons or not doesn't make any difference; they're dead.

Not necessarily the first. It is just the first that is definitively unassailable.

The fight over assault weapons is over before it started, but there is still going to be a fight for a high capacity magazine ban alone.

Don't know how the gun show background checks thing will turn out. The NRA does not actually oppose that, so long as the checks are concluded within 24 hours.

@reasoning logic,
You can always find one somewhere who is drawing attention to himself by making a grand gesture. It has no more meaning than the silly sod burning the Koran in the absence of the oxygen of publicity.

You are one very ******* silly person.

So it is your position that if an adult of average or above average intelligent could not get a firearm he could not come up with another means of killing defenseless young children trap in a small room?

Sorry the dead children are not a result of guns but the result of a sick sob who decided to killed children.
