Yes...she didn't think they'd demand that since I'd be borrowing less than I currently am.

@ehBeth,
Says Australian style....I have never been aware of licorice as any big deal here. I wonder if it's like the weird outback diner things they have in the US? Totally ersatz.

@dlowan,
Ha! High flyers now sleeping like babies. They'll have to feel stiff tomorrow...after the antics they got up to.

@dlowan,
They're made in Australia - and apparently are sold in great quantity there. It's a comparatively new style of candy here.

Quote:
In 1957, Darrell Lea’s unique soft eating liquorice was developed.

25% of the Australian liquorice market is now soft eating.

50 million strands of Darrell Lea’s soft eating liquorice are consumed by Australians of all ages each year, equating to 2.5 strands for every single Australian.

40,000km of Liquorice is produced each year at the Darrell Lea factory (ENOUGH TO CROSS AUSTRALIA 10 TIMES!)

The United States, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa & New Zealand are among the countries that now eat Darrell Lea’s famous soft eating liquorice.

@ehBeth,
Ah...Darrel Leah....I hardly eat any sweets and I really find their stuff inferior. Theres a huge shop of theirs in the middle of the city here and I hate the smell of it. They're kind of a really mass producer. They're in some kind of trouble, or about to be taken over or something...

I don't eat licorice.....never liked liked it much, except as bullets...do you guys have them?....and it's bad if you have hypertension. I used to love the traditional licorice straps as a kid. Soft licorice I don't like at all....and that red stuff....ewwww.

I think DL is pretty popular. Good on them if they're doing a good export trade.

On the corner across the mall is an Australian chocolate maker whose wares you really SHOULD try....Haigh's. Mmmmmmmmmm....

I'd be happy to send you some if you like.

@dlowan,
They're just one of the Australian producers of the stuff.

I've had Haigh's (you can get it in our Distillery District). Good stuff, but I prefer same-day chocolate. The chocolatiers tour of Manhattan I was on spoiled me.

@dlowan,
The Kookaburra website has special links for each country they export soft licorice to.

I prefer the Dutch/Norwegian salt licorice, but I see a lot of the Aussie-style in grocery baskets these days.

@ehBeth,
Yea..I see a lot of the Dutch around.

Viola just bought the extremely bedraggled feather from da bird in.....it's not long for this world.

Sigh...almost time to begin getting the place ready for the open today.

@dlowan,
This was all new to me, but just checked as I passed candy at the grocery store and sure enough, this was front and center:

@ehBeth,
Someone did....but she's either cooled or is playing a waiting game. Opens are thick upon me.

It may be that the price I need is more than the market will give right now.

Glad you like the humble abode.

@msolga,
Nah. There's an interested man who wants to bring his partner through during the week.

Man....I just had two friends turn up for dinner....I had invited them for the 11th august!

I was so exhausted after cleaning and all that flu that I clearly couldn't whip something up for them as I normally would do....so they've gone. Thing is, I've invited others because I knew they could make it!

@dlowan,
A second look-see! With partner.
That sounds promising!
Fingers crossed s/he likes it!

So one lot of way-too-early dinner guests out ... another lot in, in a bit?
That sounds like too much to me, too.
You could go to bed, turn all the lights off & pretend you forgot. Smile

@dlowan,
Ah I see.
When you said you'd "invited others" I thought you meant for tonight.
Which seemed a bit much, really.
Relieved to hear you're not such a sucker from punishment! Wink
