@dlowan,
So....we had pussy play date.
Went pretty well, all things considered. Elliot, my colleague's Devon Rex is calm and highly adaptable with traveling and with humans....a delight.
What I didn't realize is that his owner had no experience with cat adaptations to each other, and she actually brought Elliot INSIDE in her ARMS...not a container. I had expected to meet in the park. Naturally, Sebastian was shocked...Viola more philosophical.
In the park, Sebastian was quite ready to be friendly, but Elliot was grisly. Sebastian is a lot smaller and ended up quite nervous of Elliot....nonetheless both were very not bored. Elliot tolerated Viola quite happily, though a bit growly.....she adopted her quiet come closer slowly tactics, the ones she used with Miranda.
I was stunned at how well the cats got on but my colleague was disappointed because she had imagined them frolicking together in the park!
Elliot was having his first park experience and was very excited by it.
This is how I came to grief. He wass very friendly to me, but got himself too excited and attacked me when I went to pat him at one point. It was a very gentle attack...no harm done....but my colleague said that he often does that to her as his way of initiating play. We were chatting about how e obviously thinks she is another cat and he doesn't see her as being dominant, and I explained that sometimes that can be dealt with by treating the cat as his mum would...ie holding him by the scruff of the neck to calm him, and just insisting he stop attacking. This worked brilliantly the first time I demonstrated it on Elliot, but he was still over excited and attacked me again.
Now, I can't really explain this, but Sebastian, who had been nervously watching Elliot from leash length, suddenly came in from nowhere and threw himself on to Elliot and began fighting him! I don't know if Sebastian thinks I am part of his territory or what! I separated them easily but got a few scratches.
Dear little Sebastian!
We got them calm again, then Elliot was driven off, sitting up calmly in the front of the car like a little furry human!
All the cats certainly had a very stimulating afternoon.
Photos coming.
