The "In the mountains" thing is kinda funny. A few million years ago, the Continental Divide ran through here, more or less, and reportedly was a mountain range nearly a rival those later upstarts, The Rockies, The Andes, The Alps, or The Himalayas. All that's left now is known as The Blue Hills..

I remember my immediately younger sister explaining to a yet younger sibling why the Appalachins were less imposing than The Rockies (she was about 7, I 9, at the time): "They're older, and people have been walking on them a lot longer", she said. Laughing

Yer sister was a dang smart girl!

Piff - it's very brightly sunny today - and very brilliantly cold. -20
We're expecting more snow overnight.
I'm charging the batteries for the digital, so I can try and get you a pic of the pile of snow in the backyard.

People with really tiny yards have run out of places to pile up the snow that they're shovelling off of sidewalks and driveways.

Hereabouts, BTW, we have The Timberland Hills , which essentially is the same topography as the earlier referrrenced Blue Hills. Don't take much to entertain us.

Well, shoot, I found this... and your name is Timm brrrrrr Land, right? Here's another one named for ya.

http://americasroof.com/image/wi-lake.jpg

The summit from High Point Village and Bass Lake which has cabins to watch the mountain from. (A bar used to be on this location but it burned.)

Timms Hill County Park
Price County, north-central Wisconsin

Looks like a good place for cross-country skiing.

Note the Month-to-Date high temp ... The warmest its been since shortly after Christmas is Zero F. And we're having a relatively mild winter, so far.

The reporting station is some 30 miles from where I live. The immediate local temps run on average 4 to 5 degrees cooler than down there in that sheltered little bowl. We're "up in the hills", and considerably more windswept, with far less urban warming influence. A town not far from here actually is named "Winter", and, well into the 1940s, apart from lumber, a key export from the area was ice. Our lakes generally freeze over in October or early November, and remain relatively thickly ice-covered (like 3 or 4 feet) well into April.

Here's another Wisconsin Winter image, this one from The BBC

Its really pretty typical. There's a joke that goes: Q - Whats the difference between Wisconsin and most of the rest of the country?
A - Most places, if someone comes to the checkout counter in a gas station at one in the morning wearing a full-face stocking cap and sunglasses, the clerk will shriek, hand over the cash, and plead "Don't hurt me!" In Wisconsin, the clerk will ask "What pump were you on?"

Just got home . . . colder'n' any witches tit, that's for sure. A drive which normally requires 15 minutes took 45 minutes. I don't mind the blizzard so much as being obliged to share it with so many clueless drivers . . . hell, i'm a country boy and i drive better in the snow than these Yankees . . .

It is definitely cccold! The roads here are very slippery. Some people think just because they have four wheel drive, they can drive as fast as they want. I saw a few spin outs on the road, I'm thankful I got home safely.

Man, supposed to get up to around 20 F (-7 C) here. Balmy. Not warm enough to melt the dog turds frozen in the snow, though.

the bright sun makes it a bit (Ha!) deceptive
15 cm of snow predicted overnight

you're right about those balmy temps, peppermintPD. when i was at the doc's on Monday, we talked about how tropical it seemed at -10 C.

It's 1 degree here. (Windchill.) I like that. It's cute. No minuses, just a little tiny 1, all by itself.

Even in God's country we're screwed. We're going to get a quarter inch of ice over 2 inches of snow, and my Sunday night gig has already canceled.

Before you yankees laugh too much, remember that it's not financially viable for us to have the equipment to get out for the occasional storm, so we just get paralyzed and sit it out

Grocery store shelves are empty, people are already running off the roads because they're not being scraped. I skidded myself and I know how to drive in snow.

We will have a power failure from ice on the lines and that's that. Fortunately we have a generator that will run the house, but we are on a Community well and it will take them until Tuesday to get their lazy asses out here and get the pump working again so it's PTA baths for the next day or so. We have a big crockpot we keep full of warm water for that. We flush our toilets with water from the pool.

Nothing for it now but put the cubs to bed tonight and whip out the bong, the tequila and the porn.

Good afternoon...from about 4 hours north of BPB's
place. It has finally started to snow here. My NPR station comes out of SW VA, down in the mountains near the VA, NC, WV and TN borders. When I got up at 6:30 am they were already starting to announce cancellations of church services etc.
It's been 20 degrees all morning after a nighttime low of 10. Yesterday was cold, too. So the snow, light as it is, is already starting to creep onto the pavement.
I hope it will stay cold enough to stay snow. BPB mentioned ice. Snow is okay, but we are more prone to ice. Ice kills cars and people and trees and powerlines.
Bear has the bare necessities to keep him amused.
We've got plenty of food and things to keep us amused.
It's snowing hard, now. -rjb-
