@JPB,
We are all the mental result of the rhetoric we have been exposed to since infancy JP. A general climate of violent expression, in which the map with the gunsights is a very small, possibly insignificant, component, must have a crucial link to the shooting. I cannot see any other source for it. The difference between the shooter and others so influenced could well be one of nerve.

If one person does such a thing it is reasonable to assume that many others are disposed to do the same but the fear of the consequences stays their hand.

@ehBeth,
Also there is a difference in saying "I wish so and so was dead" and saying "use second amendment rights to remedy the Harry Reid problem." It is just irresponsible language to use in public forums. Perhaps us the left were too quick to blame before we knew facts. However, that kind of language is inciting violence and I am not sorry for bringing it up if it has the effect of toning out that kind of language in the future.

I have said, as things stand right, it is clear there is no connection, just reading back through some posts and responding.

@spendius,
In so much that we're all a product of our environment, I agree with you, spendi. And I agree that the environment of our day to day bombardment of all things negative has an effect. However, we're talking about a mentally disturbed young man who may or may not have participated in, or been affected by, the world around him.

From all reports to date, it appears that this is a Very Troubled Individual who lived within a very small universe -- that space in his head where cultural and environmental influences may not have penetrated.

I do think the overall climate is anything but healthy to all of us. And, I agree, that there may be some who are less disturbed than Mr Loughner who may be pushed to a "2nd Amendment solution" against someone who has been "targeted" by a dynamic and pretty hate-monger.

@H2O MAN,
Asserting that the rhetoric of the gunsight map had no link to the shooting is not the same as saying that the general rhetoric on Mr Obama's watch is not linked to it. America has many more shooters like this young man than does any other country in the Western world. I presume it isn't something in the drinking water.

Re the title... one can only hope. Re the point... I agree completely.

Quote:
*** The Incredibly Shrinking Palin? The president’s speech made Palin’s response look very small by comparison. While Obama tried to uplift, Palin tried to settle scores. While the president called for more civility, the former Alaska governor talked about duels and “blood libel.” And while Obama’s message was, well, presidential, Palin’s was not. We’ll say this: If Palin has ambitions for the White House -- and we’re still not sure she does -- then her tone, message, and timing from her eight-minute video was a serious miscalculation. Is this what happens when you live in a bubble? Is this what happens when you don't have advisers you trust that live outside her bubble? Palin's speech struck as a natural response only if she spent the last three days reading every nasty email and Tweet she received, and didn't extract herself from the story. Source

@JPB,

THE PRESIDENT'S SPEECH

Quote:
Oh ... and about Sarah Palin. Yesterday we saw why the Republicans just cannot even flirt with the idea
of making her the GOP candidate for president in 2012. Compare her statement to Obama's last night.
Obama will eat her alive on the stump. Recognize that now to avoid carnage in the future.

@JPB,
It is interesting...

One poster comments about how Obama used his speech at the Fort Hood memorial as a political speech and someone else wonders why Obama never attended a memorial for the Fort Hood victims.

It kind of makes you wonder what kind of reality some people live in.
