@slkshock7,
John Roll, the federal judge reportedly killed, lived in the neighborhood. He graduated from the law school at the University of Virginia here in Charlottesville.
In 2009, he received death threats after allowing a $32M civil rights lawsuit against an Arizona rancher to go forward.
That is the take by one of our local media outlets. I can't vouch for the story yet.

@realjohnboy,
Same thing I heard. Can't see that I would expect a shooter to go to a Dem rally (he is a GHW Bush appointee) to shoot a Repub Judge.

Reports: Judge Roll Received Death Threats
Federal Judge Killed in Ariz. Was Target 2 Years Ago After Controversial Ruling
...
Just two years ago, he was targeted with death threats -- and given a security detail -- after ruling that a group of illegal immigrants could go forward with a multi-million dollar civil rights lawsuit against a state rancher, reports CBS News chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford..

The Arizona Republic reported in July 2009 that Roll once logged more than 200 callers in one afternoon after the ruling that yielded death threats against the judge and his family.

A security protection detail provided by the Marshals Service followed Roll and his wife for about a month.

U.S. judiciary facing rise in death
threats

The Arizona Republic

...
In February, when U.S. District Judge John Roll presided over a $32 million civil-rights lawsuit filed by illegal immigrants against an Arizona rancher, the Marshals Service was anticipating the fallout.

When Roll ruled the case could go forward, Gonzales said talk-radio shows cranked up the controversy and spurred audiences into making threats.

In one afternoon, Roll logged more than 200 phone calls. Callers threatened the judge and his family. They posted personal information about Roll online.

"They said, 'We should kill him. He should be dead,' " Gonzales said.

Roll, who is the chief federal judge in Arizona, said both he and his wife were given a protection detail for about a month.

"It was unnerving and invasive. . . . By its nature it has to be," Roll said, adding that they were encouraged to live their lives as normally as possible. "It was handled very professionally by the Marshals Service."

At the end of the month, Roll said four key men had been identified as threat makers.

The Marshals Service left to him the decision to press charges but recommended against it. Roll said he had no qualms about following their advice.

The recommendation was based on the intent of those making the threats.

"I have a very strong belief that there is nothing wrong with criticizing a judicial decision," he said. "But when it comes to threats, that is an entirely different matter."

@BillW,
The silly leaps you libs make to prove your point continue to astound me. FYI...here's the Democrat equivalenthttp://www.ndol.org/upload_graphics/BP_0405_heartland1.gif

Shall we leap to similar conclusions about the target graphics and language here?

For what it's worth, Giffords strongly supports 2nd amendment rights...

from her Congressional website..

Quote:
Guns

Congresswoman Giffords signed Amicus Briefs submitted to the Supreme Court in support of rights granted under the Constitution’s Second Amendment regarding the DC and City of Chicago gun bans.
Congresswoman Giffords is a cosponsor of the Veterans Heritage Firearms Act which allows a 90-day amnesty period during which veterans and their family members can register in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record any firearm acquired before October 31, 1968.
She was a cosponsor of the Second Amendment Enforcement Act in the 110th Congress. It would restore Second Amendment rights in the District of Columbia by correcting DC’s law in order to restore the fundamental rights of its citizens under the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution and thereby enhance public safety.
Congresswoman Giffords spearheaded a letter to Southwest Regional Chief of U.S. Forest Service Gail Kimball on May 12, 2008 expressing concern of decreasing opportunity for recreational shooting on National Forest Service land. It was signed by Congressman Trent Franks and Harry Mitchell.

@slkshock7,
I see you suffer from reading comprehension and understanding its application like so many other conservatives. Oh well, it is sad <sigh>

@slkshock7,
I am not sure it means much, slk, but it perhaps should be noted that your "Targeting Strategy" was from December 13, 2004.
This shooter is, I think we can agree, a total whack-job.
I am sure there will be those who will be eager to fan the flames from any angle that suits their causes.

@slkshock7,
One big difference in your comparison of the imagery and advocacy is that Will Marshall, the author of that article, has never held an elective office such as governor and was never a candidate for the vice president of the US. Sarah Palin has.

I read too many tabloid headlines. I heard Arizona/Palin and immediately thought of Bristol - who just moved there.

Right-wingers online got awful defensive about this, real quick - warning of the 'Democrat smears to come' long before any of the Dem sites have in fact begun to smear anyone.

@Butrflynet,
Not sure why the author of the graphic is relevant...the graphic is on an official Democrat-endorsed site for an organization that includes membership from prominent Democrats including Hillary Clinton.

Bottom line is that both come from Political Action Committees on opposite ends of the aisle...you can't blame one for violent provocation without blaming the other as well...especially before we even know the motivation of the shooter.

Hardly...Democrats began smearing the right as soon as Giffords name came out as a victim.

@realjohnboy,
Sure...Daily Kos was blaming Palin less than an hour after the incident. They had Sara's graphic up at 10:50 am....Giffords was shot at around 10 am.

@spendius,
Nah, those are words/sentiments that have poured from the mouths of many a US citizen/politician/president, Spendi. You could probably come up with ten or so "targets" is the time it takes you to quaff your first pint.

When you engage in such treachery you stick it to yourself.

Have you noticed who's missin'?

Actually, I need to issue a correction...the posts on Daily Kos were posted at 1050 PST, so actually was a bit more than one hour after she was shot.

Well, if they are warning of "smears to come" they are at least acknowledging your point. They are making a forecast. The merit (or lack of it) in the forecast will be determined - as with all forecasts - by future events.
