@sozobe,
The Huffington Post also identifies Jared Lee Loughner as the shooter. Google in his name for more information.

If only Giffords had been armed, this wouldn't have happened.

@littlek,
Very confusing. Grammar, literacy, treasonous Constitution, 'new currency'...other stuff. Hard to piece it all together right now.

@Setanta,
House Speaker John Boehner said he was "horrified" by the shooting.

"Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. We must reserve those for public officials of countries that we want to invade."

According to this wacky website ( http://www.estergoldberg.com/views_from_a_broad/2011/01/sarah-palin-had-democratic-rep-gabrielle-giffords-of-arizona-on-her-hit-list.html ), Palin posted the 20 again on Thursday, six months after the passage of health care reform, on a website entitled:

www.takebackthe20.com

It's worth noting that this website has already been shut down, and that it posted the map with the crosshairs.

Whether the shooter was a Palin fan or not, such images are inexcusable. Talking about "second amendment solutions" (Angle) is inexcusable.

When we say things or post images we need to keep in mind that there are a lot of sick idiots out there. Period.

Judge Roll who died today was a George Bush Sr. appointee at the bequest of John McCain. He lived near the Safeway where the shooting occurred. Judge Roll had just stopped by to shake Rep Giffords hand. Rep Gifford district is a primarily Republican district. She won her last election by less than 2%, one of the closest elections in the country. She has been threatened in the past, a gun was left at one of her past town hall meetings.

ANALYSIS
With Giffords Shooting, A Grim Milestone
No female member of Congress has ever been assassinated

By Matthew Cooper
Saturday, January 8, 2011 | 5:25 p.m.

The shooting of Gabrielle Giffords raises any number of questions: What is happening to our country? What has happened to our politics? Who would do such a thing?
[...]
The shooting of Giffords—a mother (her husband had children by a previous marriage), a young woman of 40, the wife of an astronaut and the in-law of another who is currently in space—is horrible by any measure. It is the first time a female elected federal officeholder has been shot. It’s a reminder that female politicians are no more protected than female cops or firefighters, soldiers or corrections officers. And yet the first time we hear about a mother killed in the line of duty or a female POW, it curdles the stomach, not because of paternalism but because it marks a new barrier of decency that's been broken.
[...]
We have no idea what motivated the shooter and whether it had anything to do with politics. Even if the shooter thought he had a political motive, it's not clear what that would mean. So what if one sick person twisted the words of a mainstream politician? Jodie Foster wasn't to blame for the crazed mind of John Hinkley, who shot President Reagan in an attempt to impress the actress. Ironically, Giffords had been a fierce advocate for the mentally ill.

We'll know more soon. What we know now is that our country is more like Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan than we thought when we got up this morning.
