I don't care if this mosque or any church is ever built in America. Just because i believe in democracy does not mean i want the circus to come to town. I am sick of religious freaks. Let's build a museum dedicated to evolution there.

@RexRed,
We have plenty of churches and plenty of museums, but never the twain shall meet.

Most all the churches in Europe are now de facto museums, and I suspect that America will follow.

I went to a church in Amsterdam that was converted to a smoke shop, stained glass and all. Talk about a religious experience. The priest with dreads sold me big bud of kind. Smile

As predicted by me, the spiritual leaders overwhilming calling for support of the project has had zero effect. They speak only for themselves, they have no ability to convince the people

Quote:

"But almost all New Yorkers agree that America’s belief in freedom of religion gives Muslims the right to build the mosque," Carroll said.

The poll found that 80 percent of New Yorkers believe the mosque’s backers have a legal right to build on the site they own near Ground Zero, while a scant 15 percent said they don’t.

But by a margin of 67 to 21 percent, those surveyed said the mosque should be moved voluntarily.

Republicans overwhelmingly rejected the idea that a mosque near Ground Zero is appropriate by a margin of 90 to 8 percent. But 50 percent of Democrats said a mosque at the location is ok, compared with 34 percent who said it isn’t appropriate.

Independent voters say 63 to 30 percent that it’s wrong.

The survey of 751 likely voters from around New York State was conducted from Sept. 16th to 20th. The margin of errror is +/- 3.6 pecentage points.

Managing to get people to blow their sunday mornings for generations was a pretty good sell you'll admit?

Are you suggesting that there is a connection between willingness to get to the service and following what the person at the podium says? I hang out with Catholics, and for the most part I dont see that. They get all their points for showing up and acting like they are paying attention enough to sit, stand and knell at the right times, and mouth the words to the hymns. I dont know how many people listen to the lecture, I know I dont. I do know how few actually sing ... almost all the mouths are moving though

@hawkeye10,
You can't go by what Catholics do. Or at least those who you are referring to. You should broaden your horizons and come out of your little skewed world where rose coloured glasses are not required.

There are many more religious dominations and many sing beautifully, look forward to the service and try to live by what they hear.

@Intrepid,
Intrepid, once Hawkeye says this you know he is only speaking for himself and how closed his mind is...

That's his problem--he only listens to what he wants to hear. Not just in Church, but in most of the threads he posts in. That's why he never has a complete or balanced view of anything. And it's also why you can't have a discussion with him. He doesn't really appreciate anything that doesn't fit in with his narrow view, so he either dismisses it or attacks it, despite the fact that the info might be valid, and might actually enhance his understanding of the larger picture. He can't tolerate ambiguity, or complexity.

If you can't listen, you can't learn. Hawkeye has yet to realize that.

How do you know what I read here and what I seriously consider? You don't, you obviously dont, you could not possibly know. That post of yours I read, I also know that is boils down to slanderous Bull ****.

Now that I have listened to you the question is why are you personally attacking me? Considering how often you personally go after people who dont agree with you why is it that you have such a hard time sticking to the subject being discussed? Why do you have such a hard time being civil?

@hawkeye10,
I know how you respond to other posters, and I can't recall your ever giving credence to anything anyone else said that did not fit in with your particular narrow views.

You are not the one to talk about being "civil". You are extremely personally insulting to anyone who does not agree with you. In fact, you can rarely respond without throwing in an insult or two.

I have no problem sticking to the topic. You injected yourself into the topic by commenting on the fact that you don't listen to the sermons in Church. Well, what does that have to do with building a mosque/community center in low Manhattan?

I have no idea what you are referring to. But slander refers to the spoken word. If you want to sue me for libel, go right ahead. But you have to have a reputation to defend first. Your reputation at A2K leaves something to be desired.

in your language credence and listening means the same thing as agreeing. I am nearly 50 years old, and I am well educated, on a lot of subjects my mind is made up. I am open to changing it based upon new information or a new way of looking at old information, but that does not happen much at a2k because I rarely hear anything here that I have not heard before.

Unlike you I dont care much if people agree with me or not, I dont for instance hald it against you that you dont agree with me often.

Are you ready to talk about the subject yet, or do we rather need to do more of this tangent talking about Hawkeye??

1 - May I remind you that education and intelligence are exclusive of each other.

2 - The fact that you have heard something before should be an indication to you that more than one person is of the same mind on what it is you are hearing. You, therefore, are the obstacle to your own enlightenment.

3 - You mention above that your mind is made up on a number of subjects. This would indicate that you have no desire for discussion and, as has been pointed out numerous times, consider your view to be the only view.

4 - You, quite often, take a thread off topic and then blame others for your lack of courtesy and tact.

5 - At almost fifty years of age, you should consider trying to grow up a bit. Maturity is not just a matter of getting older.

6 - There is no valid reason for the Mosque not to be built.

@Intrepid,
Well said,Wow! Why am I not surprised to hear you say somthing like that? If one keeps listening to another that they have disagreed with they may find things that they would not expect. Things that they have incomon and are agreed upon!

So you are claiming to be king now? Or are you a God? Where did you come across this jurisdiction that you are claiming to decide whose will is valid and whose is not?

we are not talking about an opinion, we are talking about a claim of sovereignty. His claim is rejected. He has no right to invalidate other peoples opinions or wills, though he tries often, because he is a garden variety asshole.
