@hawkeye10,
Quote:This reminds me a lot of all the claims that Obama's life was at risk because he is black....that was BS then and this idea that American hate Islam or Muslims is BS too. We dont like this project, and the dont like these assholes who are trying to build this project, but there is no broad based hate of either Islam nor Muslims.
You don't think that the Secret Service has real concerns about the number of threats made against Obama? They had to begin protecting him when he announced his candidacy because of the increased risk that someone would try to hurt him. Why do you dismiss this as BS? You don't think we have plenty of fanatical racists who can't tolerate the idea of an African American President? Then there are the nut jobs who think he isn't really a citizen and that his actions are treasonous.
And there is broad based hatred of Muslims too. Pamela Geller & Robert Spencer & their group, Stop Islamization Of America, the ones who manufactured this mosque controversy, really do hate Muslims (and Obama as well)--check out their Web site. I don't doubt that some of their followers are quite capable of violence or of making violent threats. A lot of people haven't been thinking very rationally about this issue. If anyone is paranoid it's these people--and paranoids can be quite dangerous.
I can believe that Rauf's life has been threatened and that he needs NYPD protection. They have even had to put police protection outside the Park Place Burlington Coat Factory building.
The best thing Rauf can do is stay out of sight until after election day. The mosque controversy will be a non issue after that because the politicians will no longer care about it. Visible and vocal support for the project has continued to grow, and the "big" protest rally on 9/11 really fizzled out. There were more supporters than protestors at the dueling rallies. The media has cooled the coverage. Public opinion will shift in favor of the mosque being built in the next few months.
