Quite the contrary Hawkeye. Our lawbook is shrinking and our government is "nailing" fewer citizens. Not that long ago you would get arrested for going to a gay bar or for having an interracial relationship. It was once illegal to buy a beer.

Nonsense we are still building prisons as fast as possible even in this econimic hard times and have a far larger percent of the total population in them then any other Western nation and the vast majority of none Western nations.

@BillRM,
Our growing prison population is mostly due to one thing, our failed War on Drugs(tm).

That is only part of the reason.

We are now going toward sex base "crimes" to begin to help full up our jails.

There is for example nonsense going around that hundreds of thousands of young people mainly girls are being force into the sex trade every year in the US.

A study was done where it was claims that kind of large numbers of teenagers was at risk of being part of the sex trade and they included every teens living within a short distance of the Mexican border for example.

When the news media got done with this study it was no longer an at risk claim but those was the numbers being reported as taking part in the sex trade.

As a result in order to fight this almost non-existed trade new laws are being pass to give young teens hookers a free pass for hooking if they can point to someone who force them into the trade with decades of prison time for the person they charge with forcing them into hooking.

Then they added that if a john picked up a hooker and she turn out to be 16 years old then away the john go for a minimum of 5 years.

Then we have crazy child porn laws where if a teenage male have a naked picture of his under 18 years old girlfriend off to prison he goes for four years minimum even if they are living in a state where the age of consent is such that legally they could have sex every night of the week. He just can not have a picture of her even if he can screw her all he wish to.

One way or another with special note of the private prisons now coming into being we will find ways and reasons even with a dropping crime rate to keep our prisons full.

@BillRM,
Well Bill,

Of course you can always find thing that you consider problems today. But this discussion is comparing them with the past. I think it is hard to argue that things aren't better today in many many aspects.

We don't have raids on gay bars any more. We don't have lynchings. We have free and easy access to pornography (with the single exception of child pornography). We have interracial marriages and interracial adoptions. We no longer disappear pregnant teenage girls to "farms". We can drink in public. We can now buy liquor on Sunday.

Sure there are always things to complain about. But compared with past eras in United States history we are doing pretty well.

@maxdancona,
If you was a black male or female and know that with 8 percent of the total population you have 40 or some percents of the total prison population you would not feel that things are getting better even with a black president in the Whitehouse.

Yes it is getting better for gays but they are just one group and it is not getting better for Mexican Americans or blacks for example.

@BillRM,
Get out of here! Are you really going to claim that things were better for African Americans than they were say 100 or even 50 years ago? Even Michelle Bachmann is backing away from such claims.

And things are much better now for Mexican Americans than they have been in the past when US citizens were deported in large numbers with no recourse. Life is much better for Native Americans too.

I am not arguing that there isn't a lot of room for improvement in the US in our treatment of minorities.

But the good old days weren't always good....

@maxdancona,
Let see in the 1950s the prisons was not full of blacks and 80 percents of black children got to grow up in families with both set of parents.

Bill, you are being ridiculous. In the 1950s there were lynchings.

@maxdancona,
So are you saying that 80% of black children growing up without both parents is better than blacks being lynched? Maybe you mean something different.

@reasoning logic,
Absolutely, Being lynched is much worse than growing up in a single parent family.

I don't even understand why this is in question.

@reasoning logic,
And the blacks raise their kids in poverty more than anyone else, a direct consequence of black men and black women refusing to do the work to create family units.

Quote:
34% of black children live in poor families. In the 10 most populated states, rates of child poverty among black children range from 28% in California to 48% in Ohio.
29% of Latino children live in poor families. In the 10 most populated states, rates of child poverty among Latino children range from 19% in Florida to 34% in North Carolina.
13% of Asian children live in poor families (comparable state comparisons are not possible due to small sample sizes).
10% of white children live in poor families. Across the 10 most populated states, rates of child poverty among white children do not vary dramatically; the range is 8% to 11%.

Because some of us consider a childhood ruined is worse than lynching? Shall we test this theory and see how many black kids are willing to go through a lynching in exchange for being placed in a stable family unit that has the resources to raise them well?

@maxdancona,
They are both bad! Death is bad but how many deaths are caused by 80% of the black population growing up in single poor families? How many spiritual deaths has this caused? I would think that there are more than just blacks that die from this situation.

Whites were lynched at a rate 35.5% higher than their proportion in the population, most often accused of crimes against property (chiefly theft). During the Delta's frontier era, blacks were lynched at a rate lower than their proportion in the population, unlike the rest of the South. They were most often accused of murder or attempted murder in half the cases, and rape in 15%.

This just shows that we are the fifth ape!

@maxdancona,
Sorry even at the worst of the worst time for lynching you are not talking about large numbers or many areas of the country where that was happening however as far as children growing up in households with both parents or not you are talking about millions of children being given either a good beginning in life or as of now a far poorer beginning then they are facing now.

The 'Ground Zero' Mosque opened up for business yesterday, and nobody noticed or cared.

It's quite obvious that this entire contreversy was nothing more than a way for right-wingers to exploit xenophobia for their own electoral gain. And there's a lot of people who chimed in against it who ought to be ******* ashamed of themselves for their attitudes.

Bullshit, they found $70k to put up a temp art exhibit in one of the buildings that is to be torn down, and then sent out a press release saying that the project is open.... Some people are dumb enough to buy the assertion, most of us are not.

EDIT: these guys remind me of the Libyan rebels, they say the most outrageous things and get taken seriously because what they are saying is what many people want to hear. That their words have no connection to facts gets glossed over most of the time.

Lower Manhattan's controversial Park51 Islamic center is now in a court battle with utility Consolidated Edison, which says the center owes it $1.7 million in a dispute over back rent.
In court papers, Park51 says it owes Con Edison only $881,000 and calls the utility's demand "grossly inflated." The center has filed suit against the company over a default notice it was issued in September, and a New York state judge has stayed any action until after a hearing in November.

The Park 51 people are not paying their bills and are not playing nice with others??!!

SHOCKING!
