@JPB,
I've been looking for a "before" picture of the same area of Gilchrist but I haven't been successful. It's hard to know if there were other properties that were washed away completely as in the Crystal Beach area where one full street has been washed out to sea.

I'm starting to hear what amounts to conspiracy theories on suppression of the death toll. Not going to speculate but I imagine it will rise somewhat. I do know that some folks were able to walk/swim 4 miles from Crystal Beach to High Island where they were rescued.

Hell of a site though.

@JPB,
I can't imagine that they wouldn't find more. If folks didn't leave and there is that kind of damage - there may be some they never find again. I am horrified by it all.

The guy who can't find his wife...

Hardy, originally from Slidel, La., but moved to Galveston after hurricane Katrina hit that area. Hardy and his wife were separated during hurricane Ike and he has yet to find her.

@mismi,
That one house in Gilchrist is becoming the most photographed property in Texas.

@JPB,
It really is...it looks as thought the cement it was built on shifted even...I can't imagine that it would be livable even though it is still standing. I mean serious gutting and spraying down with chlorine (they tried that in Mom and Dads house) for the black mold...nightmare. The fact is - that many will be just like Mom and Dad and have to hope they can just find someone to buy their property from them as is. Sad. So sad.

I am glad, Soz, that Columbus came out reasonably unscathed. I have mentioned before that the cowboy media tends to cover the hurricanes coming ashore and then ignores the impact further inland.
Whenever I fly west (usually on Delta), I try to go from Cville to the hub in Cincy vs Atlanta. I like the Cincy airport. I heard today about the turmoil there from Ike. Many, many delayed or cancelled flights and, like all airports, a whole lot of glass. They had folks huddle on the concourses next to and in the restrooms.

I can see the fundaments/floors of a couple of other houses in that photo... They must all have been completely swept out.

Re a "before" photo, this is the satellite photo of Gilchrist on Google Maps, at different zoom levels. It's from before the hurricane (I dont know how often they refresh them, their satellite picture of my neighbourhood is a couple of years old).

It looks like this is the area where the photo above was taken - and there were a bunch of houses there. (Click on the photo for larger version.)

Then again, it also looks like the kind of site where, if you buy a house there, you know that you're going to be f*cked if a hurricane ever heads your way.

More Crystal Beach views

Before (couple years ago)
http://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/2008/crystalbeach.jpg

Keep in mind that because Ike was "only" a cat 2 hurricane that the US has still not been hit by a "major" hurricane this year.

From Dr Jeff Masters, cofounder of WeatherUnderground
Quote:
Climatologically, the last half of September is one of the busiest periods in the Atlantic for hurricane activity. The peak of the season occurs on September 10, and the entire month of September is very active, with a high chance of dangerous major hurricanes (Figure 2). Sea Surface temperatures and oceanic heat content are at their peak right now, and have not begun to cool yet. Wind shear is near average or a little below average over most of the tropical Atlantic, and is forecast to remain so for the next two weeks. The peak portion of hurricane season lasts until mid-October, and I anticipate that we have at least one more major hurricane coming, and probably 4-5 more named storms.

I suspect that Rockhead has Edgar's phone number. It would be cool if RH could call him. I know that Edgar must have a lot of other stuff on his mind, but he might like hearing from us.

@realjohnboy,
As much as I would love to speak to EB again, his concern was having no way to recharge his battery for his phone.

We kept it Very brief for practical reasons.

He is fine, and a very wise man...

Give him a week or so, I got my ear to Houston as well.
