Well, I have the yard secure and have been moving things inside the house. The things we are taking are mostly packed, some of it in the car. I am putting plastic covers on items that might get wet if a hole gets poked in the roof in that area. The dog is getting excited and a bit anxious. At ten twenty Central time, the skies are mostly cloudy and it is breezy. More to do, but I need a break.

@JPB,
IKE IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST NEAR 12 MPH...19 KM/HR. A
TURN TOWARD THE NORTHWEST IS EXPECTED LATER TODAY...WITH A TURN
TOWARD THE NORTH EXPECTED ON SATURDAY. ON THE FORECAST TRACK...THE
CENTER OF IKE WILL BE VERY NEAR THE UPPER TEXAS COAST BY LATE TODAY
OR EARLY SATURDAY. HOWEVER...BECAUSE IKE IS A VERY LARGE TROPICAL
CYCLONE...WEATHER WILL BEGIN TO DETERIORATE ALONG THE COASTLINE
SOON.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS REMAIN NEAR 105 MPH...165 KM/HR...WITH
HIGHER GUSTS. IKE IS A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE ON THE
SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE BUT COULD REACH THE COAST AS A CATEGORY
THREE...MAJOR HURRICANE. STRONGER WINDS...ESPECIALLY IN
GUSTS...ARE LIKELY ON HIGH RISE BUILDINGS.

IKE REMAINS A VERY LARGE TROPICAL CYCLONE. HURRICANE FORCE WINDS
EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 120 MILES...195 KM...FROM THE CENTER...AND
TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 275 MILES...445 KM.

ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE FROM A RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT IS
954 MB...28.17 INCHES.

COASTAL STORM SURGE FLOODING OF UP TO 20 FEET...WITH A FEW SPOTS TO
NEAR 25 FEET...ABOVE NORMAL TIDE ALONG WITH LARGE AND DANGEROUS
BATTERING WAVES...CAN BE EXPECTED NEAR AND TO THE EAST OF WHERE THE
CENTER OF IKE MAKES LANDFALL. THE SURGE EXTENDS A GREATER THAN
USUAL DISTANCE FROM THE CENTER DUE TO THE LARGE SIZE OF THE
CYCLONE.
WATER LEVELS HAVE ALREADY RISEN BY MORE THAN 5 FEET ALONG
MUCH OF THE NORTHWESTERN GULF COAST.

IKE IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 5 TO 10 INCHES OVER
EASTERN TEXAS AND EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN LOUISIANA...WITH ISOLATED
AMOUNTS OF 15 INCHES POSSIBLE.

@JPB,
From Dr Jeff Masters:

Quote:
Ike's winds in Houston and inland
Winds in the Houston metro area will increase to tropical storm force--39 mph--by about 4 pm CDT today, and remain that strong for about 24 hours. Category 1 hurricane force winds of about 75-85 mph will affect the city for about an 8-hour period from midnight to 8 am on Saturday. People in well-built homes will suffer only minor damage, but mobile homes and homes not build to code will suffer significant damage. The extremely long duration of the hurricane force winds will cause much greater damage than is typical for a hurricane of this strength.

Winds and damage in Houston should will be slightly greater than was experienced during Hurricane Alicia of 1983. Alica had higher winds at landfall, but was a smaller storm that weakened relatively quickly inland. Ike's damage will cover a much wider area and spread farther inland, due to the large size of the storm. During Alicia, Houston Hobby Airport on the south side of the city recorded top winds of 89 mph, gusting to 99 mph. The strongest winds recorded at Houston International Airport, on the north side of the city, were 51 mph, gusting to 78 mph. Winds from Ike will probably be sustained at 85-90 mph at Houston Hobby, and 75-80 mph at Houston International Airport.

@JPB,
3-5 ft waves currently hitting the shoreline of Galveston Island; 8-12 ft waves offshore and approaching with 35 -39 ft waves observed near the center of the storm. Wave height is on top of any surge.

@JPB,
There are holdouts that have changed their minds about leaving that may not be able to get out, in the surge areas, according to one thing I saw.

@JPB,
Water service has been disconnected to Galveston City and a curfew has been imposed for the next few nights beginning at 8:00pm each night.

The sky has become still. We are about to make the first of two runs to the apartments.

@edgarblythe,
PDiddy is in a third floor apt near the Houston medical complex. Says he is set to ride it out.

@JustBrooke,
Thanks to all for the well wishes. If there are no tornadoes in our area I expect to get through okay.

@edgarblythe,
I wasn't aware that the pdiddy's are also in Houston. Adding them to the list of caring and concern.

@edgarblythe,
Stay safe all you Hustonians.

How far is Austin from Ike's threat? Shewolf lives there.

@JPB,
Yes, the PDiddy's are in my part of town.

I went for a walk this morning. It was hot, mostly sunny, and breezier than usual. It's mostly cloudy now, and the clouds are zipping along pretty fast.

I'm staying busy - cleaning, doing some work. (I'm officially supposed to be working from home today.) Trying to stay away from the storm coverage, as it's easy to get panicky listening to those guys.

Thanks for all the good wishes, everybody!

@BumbleBeeBoogie,
Austin is a couple hundred miles NW of Houston. Ike is expected to take a strong turn to the north towards Dallas soon after making landfall. I'll post expected wind levels in Austin and Dallas in a bit...

@JPB,
Here is the probability map of TS force winds or greater over the next 5 days. As best as I can tell, Austin is on the margin of the yellow and brown bands.
