Are the police claiming the parents and friends spent the entire afternoon and evening in a restaurant drinking red and white wine?

So they recovered a bill, but did they recover the empty wine bottles or was their a witness who recorded the number bottles of wine consumed and presumably phographed the couples while they drank all the wine?

I thought it was normal for people to drink wine at dinner...

McTag,

In the United States, local government agencies would take custody of minor children, solely for the reason that the children were left home alone while the parents were out drinking.

Not necessarily. The system is full of kids who have a whole host of problems and parents who can hardly care for themselves much less their children. Agencies, and social workers specifically, would be reluctant to remove otherwise well cared for children from a loving home (to a foster home, where abuse is rampant) for the parents' momentary lapse in judgment.

And the (terrible) speculation goes on: a report outlining how the four-year-old met her death was already with Portuguese prosecutors, said France Soir, in a report picked up by several British newspapers.
(France Soir said scientific analysis of the bodily fluids found in the boot of the car proved "the little girl had ingested medicines, without doubt sleeping pills, in large quantities".)

Plenty of people leave their kids at home alone for 2-6 hours, and nothing happens and no "officials" come knocking on the door to snatch the kids.

And, having grown up on the SouthSide of Chicago, I can say that the Chicago police have far to much to do, without having to track down
"home-alone" kids...This is I know as a FACT...

Well, I don't know what Twilight Zone you're living in, but leaving 2 and year olds home alone for any length of time whatsoever (never mind 2 - 6 hours!!!!!!!!) is immediate grounds for a check from the Children's Aid Society, at the very least, and apprehension and court in the normal scheme of things.

And I can't believe you are so blase about people leaving little ones alone while they "go to work, to the store, to the gym, to visit friends, to do the wash at the laundry on the corner." There is absolutely no excuse for leaving such young kids home alone. It's reprehensible.

This situation may be different in that the apartment was close to their table (wasn't it? - I can't remember what the distances were). I don't approve of their leaving them in any case, but perhaps if they were close and they made frequent checks, it could not be considered the same as "going to work or to the gym...) - that is totally negligent and unforgivable behaviour.

They should have foregone their dinner, in my opinion. Aren't their kids worth more than that? They could have had room service or ordered take out. There were other options, and look at the mess their lives are in now.

Kevin McCann has categorically denied ever sedating their children.

So the case seems to hang on that.

No conviction will be possible until they find a body.

Meanwhile the Kafkaesque situation continues. In this country we say "innocent until proven guilty" but this is not an attractive option for the tabloid newspapers.

You forgot the fact that babysitters charge about $15/hour and those parents who have to work for a living and make minimum wage couldn't afford
a baby sitter.

Not true!

Many "killers' have been convicted of murder, even though a body was never found.

If you haven't lived in major cities of the USA such as LA, Chicago and NY, then it's you who's living in the twilight zone.

Do you know what it's like to be an unwed mother, with 10 starving kids in a 3 bed room apartment, with no money, no support systems and trying to live on a minimum wage?

If you don't you need to leave your white, diversity sparse suburban "twlight zone" and see what it feels like to be poor and trying to make ends meet.

I'm surprised they know how to spell the word,

I'm sure on reflection you will realise what a silly and insulting thing you have written.
Didn't the Portuguese "discover" America?

By the way, all the British tabloids lead this morning on the story that Madeleine was killed by sedatives.

The appartment was 50m from the restaurant. I think the McCanns were lulled into a false sense of security. They didnt even bother to use the free baby sitting service, because they felt the children were totally secure, and they were dining only round the corner, and they checked the kids were asleep more than once. Its very easy to say they shouldnt have left them.

They surely would not have let them out of their site if they thought there was be a predatory abductor around. In fact had they thought that they would not have been in Praia da Luz or the Algarve at all and that is what this is really all about.

steve - think about what you just posted....the parents wouldn't have let the kids out of their sight if they thought a predatory abductor was around????? WTF? Maybe in Portugal the predators don't wear t-shirts emblazoned with "I'M A CHILD PREDATOR AND PROUD OF IT."

Maybe they wouldn't have gone there on vacation if they knew there was a predator there? Have you had your head in the sand Steve? Guess what....there are child predators everywhere - in every town, city, country and vacation spot.

No, if this is an instance where the parents left the kids alone, helpless and sleeping in a strange hotel bed, while they went I-don't-give-a-****-how-many-feet-away, then at the very least, they were negligent and should be prosecuted.

These were babies, that could not protect themselves. Anyone could have had a key to that hotel room. Anyone.
I don't even leave my purse in a foreign hotel room. To leave 3 babies there sleeping is beyond my comprehension.

And if anyone says one more time that 'it was only a few feet away." then my response would be "See what can happen when you're only a few feet away?"

If these parents are doctors, then they may be book-smart, but they are sorely lacking in intellegence.

But all this is all hypothetical since no body has been found.
But, if they do find her little body and it's shown that the parents killed her, I will not be one bit surprised.....just like my first post said - those who scream the loudest are usually the guilty ones.

Those pics of Kate carrying around that stuffed animal is beyond hokey and rather sickening to see.

No they leave that part out....or people might not go there. Rolling Eyes

steve - do you actually think that Praia delcrapo doesn't have it's fair share of predators? Are you that naive?

It just amazes me that someone can actually criticise a woman who's lost her child, for carrying around the child's favorite toy.

I've been sucked in too many times believing the parents. The majority of the times, I ended up feeling the fool.

I suppose I've become jaded to this kind of thing.
