From the report:

"According to a police report obtained by the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call, which disclosed the episode and the guilty plea Monday, a plainclothes police officer investigating complaints of sexual activity in the bathroom arrested the senator on June 11 after what the officer described as sexual advances made by Mr. Craig from an adjoining stall."

So, he was in the next stall and possibly made advances, but there was no sex going on, so why the hell are we talking about him having sex in a public restroom for?

just something else for people to get all in a dither about.

Because if that hadn't been a cop, and it was someone who was agreeable to the liason....it can be assumed that some sort of sex act would have taken place and A KID COULD HAVE WALKED IN THE BATHROOM......!!!!!

Rolling Eyes Laughing

A woman can be arrested for prostitution if she approaches an undercover cop. A man can be arrested for soliciting a prostitute by just asking her to have sex.
A sex act does not necessarily have to take place.

happycat, you are presuming an awful lot. If it indeed was sexual, they could have been making plans to have sex elsewhere. You are assuming it would have taken place right then and there.

Wouldn't you think they'd go to a motel or something? He being a politician would likely not have engaged in sexual activities in a public place in case he were recognized.

Well, politics based on headlines continues; Craig has just resigned his Senate Committee positions.

First of all I don't give a rat's ass who Craig has sex (adult) with (nor Clinton) Second of all is that it is the Republicans that are going bonkers over Craig probably because they have had one episode after another of "Public" failed family values in recent times and seem to be pretty sure their christian base will not be so friendly in the voting booth next year. Third, I've never had sex of any sort in a public restroom and I'm wondering just how common this is (other than airplane restrooms)

My thoughts exactly. As far as I am concerned, everyone can solicit sex anywhere they want. But I do feel a great deal of Schadenfreude that Mr. Craig's bigoted, homophobic, anti-sex, Republican chicken are coming home to roost.

In absolute contrast we have
A three-meter bronze statue of former South African President Nelson Mandela was unveiled in London Wednesday to commemorate his struggle against apartheid.-----"Though this statue is of one man is of one man it should in actual fact symbolize all those who have resisted oppression especially in my country," said Mr. Mandela. "The history of the struggle in South Africa is rich with the stories of heroes and heroines some of them leaders, some of them followers all of them deserve to be remembered."---Before unveiling the statue British Prime Minister Gordon Brown paid a moving tribute to Mr. Mandela.

"He is a man whose belief in the future was so powerful not even twenty-seven years behind bars and barbed wire could destroy his dream and his demand that by fighting apartheid from his prison cell millions today could be and are free," said Mr. Brown.

The reason the cop was there was because of complaints of sexual activity. It's not that uncommon, though there are usually sort of agreed to locations. Ya know - 2nd floor in the west tower, 2nd level underground parking ... that sorta thing ... and a bit of an agreement between the frequenters and the cops not to bother non-participating patrons who stumble into the wrong facility.

He got caught in a sweep by the sounds of it.

My husband and I got a chuckle this morning remembering about a year or so ago, while we were in an upscale mall here with a notorious mens bathroom, my hubby, "fearful" at going in, instructed me to keep an eye on the door and if he wasn't out in five minutes, I should come in after him!

Airport bathrooms are very well-known for that type of activity.

craig: "What's wrong, officer?"

officer: "You're under arrest for soliciting!"

craig;" But officer, I only shook the penis twice when I got done urinating, that's not a crime!"

officer; "Normally so sir, if it was your own penis."

I think it will be great if he doesn't resign. He will be a constant reminder that Republicans are hypocritical sleazeballs.

No one would have known about it if Monica had kept her big mouth shut afterward.

It also doesn't matter that it's a US Senator in this case EXCEPT that this is a guy that's been known to vote against gay rights.

Comparing Clinton to Craig is like apples and oranges.

happycat- I would have been less upset if Clinton had taken Monica to a hotel and screwed her there. To me, the Oval Office is one of the most public places in the United States, even if the door were closed. It symbolizes the OFFICE of the presidency. To me, getting a blowjob in the Oval Office is an affront to the office of the presidency, over and above the actions of any particular individual.

There is nothing sacred about the oval office. That is the place where Nixon taped people and planned Watergate. Moreover, it was home to Clinton (he had a leasehold interest during his term), and he could do what he wanted there.

Yeah, I was going to bring up Nixon. What he did in the Oval Office was far worse than what Clinton did.

There seems to be a disconnect here. Sen. Vitter admitted to breaking laws by hiring prostitutes, but I haven't seen where Reps are asking him to resign. Is it because Craig was involved in gay sex that he is being told to resign?

Further, it is interesting that both were holier-than-thou senators.

Someone on TV opined that the Reps want Craig out because someone may come forward saying he had sex with Craig. Moreover, the matter remains in the news as long as Craig is the butt (not pun intended) of every comedian's jokes.

I dislike dredging up Clinton, but since it has already been done, then I will comment. If the dems were quite content for Clinton to stay in office, then there should be no argument about Craig or Vitter. How can you argue they should resign while saying Clinton's actions were private? You cannot have it both ways. Illicit sex is illicit sex.

Likewise, any republican who wanted Clinton out should be demanding the resignations of Vitter and Craig. You cannot have it both ways either.

That said, my opinion is that both guys should resign. Just like Clinton should have but was not a big enough person to do so. And it doesn't appear Craig is man enough to do so either.

Wisely, the Dems have dodged the Craig matter like is was the plague. I am sure that the Dems would love to have Craig hanging on, dragging the Reps down.

To answer your first question....of course it's because it was gay sex.
I'm sure that quite a few lawmakers in DC are holding their breath and secretly ^5'ing each other that their names weren't discovered in Palfrey's phone records. Senators/congressmen/female prostitutes are a given in DC. Anyone that says different, well....I have a bridge to sell ya.
But gay sex in a airport bathroom upsets the whole apple cart.

The 'argument' appears to be coming from the American conservative side, at least from the media I've been reviewing.

Just in: Craig says that, while he is moderately happy, and sometimes uses Bengay, he is not gay.

I agree ehBeth. And I think it has to come from there. The dems cannot argue that he should resign, at least not the ones who said the whole Clinton thing was just about sex and he shouldn't be kicked out. Any republican who did chastise Clinton for his sexcapade has to demand a resignation in order to be consistent.

I think the democrats are playing this smart by just staying out of it.
