A very rare lapse in your data-mining skills:)

I know that. But I only wanted to prove that those quoted diseases WERE found in the USA - at least since 1970.

Thanks, Walter, the good wishes for 2007 of course extended to you also, as well to everybody here - must catch flight to West Coast, so see you next year Smile

High Seas... do you believe the rates of TB have increased over the past 15 years in line with the increase in illegal immigration?

Please take your strawman when you leave, blatham. For someone who is so critical of other people's thinking, you often display a surprising lack of same when you post. Posting an article written by a political pundit on a political forum is not rude. If you don't want to read Ann Coulter, then kindly exercise your scroll wheel or the ignore function on your Firefox browser. In any case, I have only posted a Coulter article a couple of times outside of the Bush Supporters thread or a thread devoted to Coulter ... and then only one time I can recall where I did not give a "WARNING" to the reader, just because I know how some of you folks just hate to see a Coulter article posted. But this nonsense that I'm rude or being an ass because I post her articles on this political forum is ridiculous.

Beyond that, the issue here is manners one displays to a stranger they meet. I would have no problem acting like a jerk towards you, blatham (or any body else), here on A2K, but I assure you that's only in response to the way you have acted to me (speaking hypothetically, of course). I tend to treat others the way they treat me. But I am certainly not rude to strangers on the street. My momma raised me better than that.

I'm getting the sense that it's the leftists at this site that are the most rude (and proud of it). Interesting anecdotal evidence, don't you think?

It's the sophistication of your moral philosophy which I find so entrancing, tico.

On the one hand, the anecdote described by ebrown wherein he was abrupt and unfriendly to a stranger on a train demands your stern public protest. Rudeness simply cannot go unmentioned. Your moral sense of how humans ought to behave towards others has been offended and you will not remain silent on the matter. Proper citizenship entails your moral remonstration. A man on a train expressing his honest opinion was unfriendly and abrupt to a stranger. Clearly, a moral outrage.

On the other hand, when Ann Coulter says to millions of citizens, that "Obviously, Gore is a total fag" not only does this falsehood and maliciously intended slander (with attached sexual bigotry) not perk up your acute moral sensibilities, it strikes you as the sort of thing jolly enough that it ought to be forwarded more broadly.

And then there is that torture thing, tico. That's ok with you. It's justified. And war? What the hell, they happen. Probably there aren't any two year old Iraqi kid's eyeballs splashed on ceilings.

But no rudeness on a train is going to pass you by without you speaking up loud and proud about right and wrong in human affairs.

I am riding on the Red Line (the subway line that passes through Cambridge Massachusetts) reading "State of Emergency" by Patrick Buchanan which I received as a Christmas gift.

The 30ish professional-looking woman next to me turns to me and says "that's a great book, isn't it?".

I ask (somewhat incredulously) "have you read it?".

"Not yet" she says "but I think Pat Buchannan is great".

"I don't" I replied "I think Buchanan is a complete wack job and this book is utter bullshit".

"So why are you reading it?" she retorted, looking somewhat hurt.

"I want to understand how people can be so stupid to swallow this nonsense." I answered.

She went back to the normal commuter behavior of staring just above the person across from her, and I went back to reading.
Why not agree with her, have sex with her, then dump her. Same net result, just more entertainment value along the way!

(Incredibly shallow analysis, blatham ... especially for you. I does carry one of your central themes though.)

What caused its mention was the celebratory tone with which the news of his rudeness was received. It stuck me to hear the responses to his rudeness on this thread, cheering him on, encouraging his boorish behavior. You have joined this thread not to take a position vis ebrown's conduct, you just think I'm a hypocrite for being critical of ebrown's lack of proper social behavior, while not being critical of Ann Coulter, and you also blather on about torture and war. What's torture is trying to follow your thought process here.

Whether ebrown's conduct was rude, or not, is an easy enough question, and it's already been agreed upon. He was rude .... it's who he is. You are exercised at the thought that I have social manners, and dare to be critical of a boor, while at the same time appreciate Ann Coulter's writing.

I do not believe I forwarded Coulter's article re "Gore is a total fag," nor do I believe I ever read same. Unless you have a link to where I did, what you have said above about me forwarding that article on, is a complete lie on your part. But if I had forwarded on that article (or any of the many other articles of Coulter's I've quoted that have offended anyone on A2K), my doing so is not rude. If I grabbed you on the street and forced you to read an Ann Coulter article against your will, THAT would be rude. Here on A2K you have to capacity to not read a particular post. And if you are going to waltz onto the political forum, you better be prepared to read content you don't agree with. The fact that you don't appreciate Coulter's humor does not mean I'm rude.

Was Coulter rude in calling Gore "a total fag"? Yes, she was. Am I outraged that she did? No. She's a pundit and Al Gore's a public figure. Get over it.

No, torture is not "ok" with me, and that's another lie put forth by you. You're on a roll.

Are you coming unhinged, blatham. Try to pull yourself together. There's foam coming out of your mouth, for goodness sakes.

What the hell is that supposed to mean? Please run down the street and get a Mint Frappuccino and try to wake up (and pour a pint of whiskey in it while you're at it).

No. I don't believe that there is any significant incidence of polio in the US.

I think that there are practically no cases of polio contracted in the US (meaning that immigration does not present a risk of polio to Americans). I did a bit of googling and found absolutely nothing to indicate that immigration of any kind presents a polio risk to Americans.

If you have any data to to contrary, I would love to see it.

Nope, the US/mexico border. I took my last trip to Europe about 4 years ago, didn't lose antything there, don't have to go back for it.

I find the concept of the borders being "flung open" to be fascinating. For the last six years, we've had the Shrub's administration--so perhaps this refers to the Shrub flinging the borders open.

Then again, the last significant immigration legislation was the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986--Reagan administration there.

So, the question becomes, which rightwing dimwit in the White House is responsible for "flinging" the borders open?

ebrown, I think you acted badly on the train. Ms. Manners, and any other student of acceptable behavior, would have frowned on your harsh response. You should have held back the expression of your negative views and tried to draw out the woman on her's. (Who knows, this may have led to an enjoyable tryst, or at least a nice new friendship.)

I think all of us have too freely expressed our views to those on the opposite political spectrum, and have regretted it. We should instead employ humor and questions as a means to keep the conversation somewhat pleasurable and avoid bad feelings.

It wasn't new to Bush but he certainly hasn't done anything to stem the flow of diseased illegal immigrants either.

Feel free to post the exact location of your dwelling, so that I can avoid your proximity on my next visit to the US. I'd be very pleased to do so, you don't have to thank me.

And I'm afraid we have to keep your tax €€ as compensation. Sorry.

Well put Advocate... and perhaps you are right. Fortunately I am not looking for a tryst (even an enjoyable one) right now.

But, I have the right to be grumpy when I feel like it, and Buchanan puts me in a very bad mood.
