No, it says they both are expecting. When I was expecting it meant that I was about to become a parent (in my case a father).

Since neither of them are going to be a father, it is safe to say that they are both "expecting" to be mothers.

Thus they are both mothers-to-be and the baby will be their child.

I think I know what's happening here.
