macsm 11,

Would you send me the avatar link, too? Thanks.

Dear Diary,

I was listening to the Car Guys a week ago and learned the most amazing thing: how to set my car's outside rear-view mirrors so as not to get rid of blind spots, right or left! I can't believe that this is not shouted from the skies. So many accidents are caused by blind spots, and there are more every year because large vans and SUVs are especially vulnerable. I don't have an SUV, so I can't vouch for the method with that type of car. But it works perfectly with my Honda Accord. I have told a dozen people about it, and none of them knew there was any such method.

Ray described it on the show but added that it was "complicated" and one ought to go to their website for a complete description of the method. I was driving along at 60 mph and managed to do it while I was driving, so I wouldn't call it "complicated." The mirror settings take some getting used to, but I am completely at home with it now.

Lean your head right up against the driver-side window, the side of your face touching the window, and look at your left outside mirror. From that position, adjust your mirror until you can see only a sliver of your car's back end. For the right mirror, lean your head 3-4 feet to the right from your position in the driver's seat, then adjust the right-side mirror until you can see just a sliver of the car's back end.

To test: watch a car coming up behind you in the lane left of yours. You will see him in your windshield rear view mirror and, before he disappears from that mirror, you will see the car appearing in your left outside mirror! The same with a car coming up from behind in the lane to the right of yours.

It feels spooky at first, because you cannot see any part of your own car when you look in the left or right mirror. But, when you think about it, why do you want to see your own car? It is the car coming up on you that you want to see. Try it, and tell me what you think.

kara, I don't remember where I heard of this mirror setting, but I did so about six to eight months ago, and feel very comfortable with it. No accidents yet, but it's been a very long time since my last one. Maybe the odds are gaining.... c.i.

Dear Diary,

I finally got my british nationality papers in the post yesterday. So I can now be a british citizen, provided I take the oath of alligience.

And once I become the subject of her majesty th queen, every one *better* start meaning the anthem they sing - GOD SAVE THE QUEEN Laughing

Mr. G, how interesting. I assumed you were a Brit already. Can you not have dual-citizenship if you are an Indian national?

I remember being pleased and excited when I got a formal letter from the Home Office in 1976 saying that I was now a bona-fide resident alien, after six years in the UK. I no longer had to check in with the Police every year, and I could get a job in the UK if I wanted. My husband was working in London, but I had never been allowed to get a job until I got the formal letter. I think I still have it, 26 years later.

dear diary -

I thought it would be good for me to post here every day. I'm trying to clear up my thinking, get my thoughts in shape kinda - having been on mental vacation for the better part of a year, my communication skills are rusty.

nothing in particular happened today wiorth noting. the sun rose. it snowed and then rained and then was sunny - all in the course of fifteen minutes. I ate a couple chocolate chip cookies.

God - do I REALLY want to do this every day?

Dear Diary, Well, Colin Powell will be speaking to the Security Council tomorrow, and many are wondering if he will be able to convince the 11 security council nations to approve another UN resolution to go to war with Iraq. This on top of the Columbia tragedy when we lost seven of the bravest and brightest living in this world today. What does the future hold for all of us? I just hope Iraq comes to it's senses and reveals where their WMD's are. That will prevent the tragedies of war. c.i.

Dear Diary,

I should like to wish Gautam, on behalf of Her Majesty and all her subjects, of which I have the honour to be one, an exceedingly warm welcome to our happy breed.

Long live the Queen! God bless her and all who sail in her*!

*It doesn't have to be just sailors!

OK - that's going a bit far, G, seeing as I've never even met you, but I know you'll take it the right way.

[For those of you who know Viz, just call me Finbarr!]

I'm feeling quite happy this week - I'll let you know why when there's a real reason to justify it. Meanwhile I'll just work hard and play hard.

Take care, dear diarists. KP

Dear Diary,

two more working days and it's weekend again. Time passes so fast! In just one month I will turn 41. I went to the hairdresser yesterday and her computer program ranked me in the age group of '41-50'. Hm, never thought about it that way. Oh well, as long as I feel as I feel - who cares about numbers.

urs, They are just numbers that doesn't mean much in the scheem of things. We are as young as we feel and act; at 67, I'm still active in my world travels, and will continue as long as my health remains 'youthful.' I think in this case, my brains may be lying about my body abilities, but that's okay. c.i.

c.i., you are absolutely right. I really don't care too much about these numbers. It is good to know people who think the same.

I got to spend about an hour with K my friend with stage 4 lung cancer, last night. It was great - he really has a great attitude. In the long run he's not going to win unless something technology \ medicine wise changes, it's just progressed to far. Looks like he was exposed to PCB contaminates, while working at a local Aluminum smelter. Because of his physical conditioning and large frame, he has received the largest dosages of chemo ever given to anyone in the state of WA, radiation in about 7 days is to start. They are using him as a study with Mayo and Sloan-Kettering. Believe it or not he did lose the hair on his head but still has chest and back hair, I guess this is very unusual for how he's been treated so far. We had real heart to heart conversation and tears flowed from both of us. I don't know if I love this guy so much cause it's like looking in the mirror or what. I left there in awe of his attitude.

husk, glad you shared...when I was caring for my mother before her death, I felt we communicated more openly. It made a negative situation feel positive.
