My neighbors and I were hilarious viewing the eclipse through the Sierra Pines. We probably could've driven to a much better viewing area ~
Danon ~ how spectacular! You definitely had the best view!
Cobalt ~ Thanks for the great links!
Hi Cobalt,
It was very interesting that you had found the Morgan Horse. I have one attached to my buckboard that I've named Fairchild. A really good horse in the finals.
Great to see you on the web these days.
Danon, did you take any pictures? If so, please post them. Your description was incredible.
We watched on the beach where it was quiet--almost deserted. There were a few puffy clouds that passed in front of the moon, but they added to the mystery. What I loved most was the silence except for the soft rush of the ocean. It was a beautiful night.
My dear Diane,
I have been to the summit of aurora reality in my real life - not the one portrayed here in this cyber existence - In October, '70 I flew in an OV-1 Mohawk from Fairbanks, Ak over Galena, over Nome, over Kotzebue, back over Galena, then back to Fairbanks (actually to the military airport at Fort Wainwright). It was a night flight, and as I approached Galena - on the way back to Fort Wainwright I encountered an aurora borealis while flying at 25,000 feet. That was one of the most memorable events of my life - it was as if I was flying in the aurora - not just standing on the ground looking up at it. One moment I shall only forget when I die.
Aha! I suspected your lunar eclipse flight was fiction...but this! This is even better! Wow. More details, please!
I must to bath and bed tonight. Very tired. Will join you all soon.
Viz, there are different kinds of aurora displays. Some are blurry and flat - while others are sharp and shaped like a curtain on a huge stage. Some just sit there while others move rapidly all around the sky. Some have very dull colors while others are brightly lit and display white, green, red and bluish colors.
The night I flew the aurora was a huge sharply defined curtain moving rapidly for awhile then slowly for awhile - pulsating it's colors - first bright then less bright.
You would probably be interested to hear of the night over SE Asia while flying through a T-storm my aircraft was surrounded by St Elmos Fire. Straight out of the Twilight Zone.
Danon, I would have thought I'd died and gone to heaven if that had happened to me!
Please describe both events in detail when you have the time--or start a thread of your own about experiences while flying. I'll bet HofT would add a few interesting posts.
I flew as an attendant for TWA back in the age of dinosaurs. During training, we were told about St. Elmo's fire and to simply sweep it down the aisle until it disappeared. I never saw any in my three years of flying.
I have heard the phrase "St. Elmo's Fire," but I don't know what it is. Could you explain, danon?
Found this link for ya Viz ~ eplaining how St Elmo's Fire phenom originates ~

Thanks, Stradee! Now that I know what it is, I'm waiting for danon to describe what it was like to fly through it.
Well, ladies. "It was a dark and stormy night" Naaa, that sounds too trivial and ordinary. Hmmm, "It was a dark and - - - - - night" Hmmmm, ???
"Idiot," said Momma, "Sultry!!!! It was a dark and sultry night"
<<snip from Throw Mamma From The Train>>>
Anyway, it was storming all around - err, it was sultry all around? Ahh, it was raining, really hard. The aircraft was a large twin engined turbo-prop. The light started as a faint glow - whitish, greenish around the tips of the propellers. Then it spread onto the wings - glowing brightly over the leading edges and apparently floating about a foot or so over the wings surfaces. It eventually became a cocoon around the plane. The brightest glow was still around the propellers. This lasted for about 20 mins then gradually went away.
It was rather fun.
Then there was the time I saw two perfect circle rainbows - one smaller one inside a larger one.
Hope this was descriptive enough - you really had to have been there to feel the event.
That was VERY descriptive, danon!
