When I was in Mexico, we were having lunch and the topic of illegal immigration came up. I was taken aback when one of the locals referred to the immigrants as "wetbacks". I asked him about it and he said it referred to those that swim accross the Rio Grande to illegally enter the US.

He was surprised when I told him that in America, that was regarded as a derogatory term.

"They can come here illegally and call me a racist. What the **** is wrong with that picture?" --cjhsa

I find it hard to believe illegal immigrants are coming here and calling you racist. I doubt they have the audacity to bike through your neighborhood or move onto your block, knowing they'll have to bare themselves to your uncanny discernment.

But I, on the other hand, am as American as anyone and I think you're a race-baiting hypocrite.

My request may have gotten lost in the fray, but there is something you can do to make this thread worthwhile (unlike most political threads.

Please call your senator and tell them to support McCain-Kennedy and especially a path to legalization.

This is an important time as next week, when the Senate returns, immigration will be at the top of the agenda. We especially need you to call your senator if he or she is a Republican.

Call your senator becuase you care about immigrants. Call them because you like me. Call them because of CJ... It doesn't matter.

But your call will make a difference.

set,
We actually paid $20,000,000 for the southwest, then we also paid cash for the Gadsden purchase.

So yes,we did fight a war,but we also paid cash for and bought that area.

So,your grasp of history is sorely lacking.

Mysteryman,

Let's say I demand that you sell me your house for (let's say) $20million-- and you say "no".

Then let's say I force you out of your house.

Then I pay you the original amount that I already offered (and you already refused).

Is this a proper deal? Or is this theft?

In the real world it's called lots of things, theft being one of the more polite terms.

Between nation-states it's called a policy disagreement and folks die because of those.

let's say Mexico had annexed Texas years ago and cjhsa lived in mexico. He'd be screaming about how they should be sweeping Mexico and shooting every white man with a cowboy hat.

Cjhsa just never got over playing sheriff and bad guy. It's the game and the pose that matter right?

we have a ton of immigrants around here... the triangle is extremely diverse... and I rarely hear of anyone popping a cap in whitey unless it's their redneck whitey cousin at one of the outlying trailer parks.....our next door neighbors are hispanic... quiet, neat, pleasant, and not a goat or chicken in sight.

grow up.

Well over 50% of this country was aquired thru force of arms, including the original 13 states.
Should we return all of it?

To answer your question,NO it wasnt theft.

According to the records, the war began when Mexican Forces attacked US forces...

So,since they attacked, they paid the price.

So,then show me where I'm wrong?

Except for the Louisiana purchase, the Gadsden purchase, and the purchase of Alasksa, and possibly the annexation of Texas,we did aquire the rest of the country thru force of arms.
Care to prove me wrong?

We did pay for the southwest, and Mexico did attack US forces to start that war.

Care to prove me wrong on any of what I just said???

So,you dont deny that we did pay $20,000,000 and you dont deny that Mexico attacked us,and you dont deny that "to the victor go the spoils"?

Then what is your disagreement?

yeppers M&M, the mugger said to me "I give you a dollar for that watch and wallet" the gun he held at my head at no bearing on the validity of the sale.

Your argument is meaningless if you refuse to admit that Mexico attacked US.
We didnt attack them.
So,since they attacked us,I think that paying them for the land we won from them was rather big on our part.

We didnt have to give them anything.
