mystery, why don't you go back and read your own source beyond the first paragraph. It doesn't support you.

I didnt say that there werent political forces at work, nor did I say that the US was blameless.
I said that they fired the first shot.

You apparently missed this paragraph from my link...

Quote:
On Apr. 25, 1846, Mexican troops crossed the Rio Grande and ambushed a detachment of American dragoons commanded by Capt. Seth B. Thornton. Taylor's report of this ambush reached President Polk on the evening of May 9, a Saturday. On Monday, May 11, Polk presented his war message to Congress, and on Wednesday, May 13, over the vigorous opposition of the abolitionists, the U.S. Congress voted to declare war on Mexico. In the meantime two more Mexican attacks had been made across the Rio Grande at Palo Alto (May 8) and Resaca de la Palma (May 9), and both had been repulsed.

No matter what the reasons, once they crossed the Rio Grande and attacked US troops,it was war.
So I repeat, they attacked us,they started the war, they paid the price for it.

I will ask this again, since you are all so afraid of answering it...
Should we return every part of US territory we took by force of arms?

mm, highly simplistic. As well say it was started when the US invaded disputed territory and started building a fort on it, a hostile act which was the direct cause of the Mexicans trying to drive them out. see wikipedia on the war.

Well, let's see. If we gave Texas back to Mexico, George Bush and Tom DeLay would no longer be US citizens and would have to resign. Yeah, it'd be worth it. Let's go for it.

The US annexed Texas,at the request of the Texas govt,so it wasnt disputed territory.
The only dispute was where the border was.
We recognized the Rio Grande,Mexico didnt.

As for giving back Texas,OK lets do that.
But,we would also have to give the 13 colonies back to England, the southwest back to Mexico,Hawaii back to the Royal Family,.
In short, everything except the Gasden Purchase, the Louisiana purchase, and Alaska would have to be given back.
Of course, that also means Guam,Puerto Rico, the Marianas Islands, and every other Pacific Territory we have must be returned.

Are you really willing to do that?

All of the territory between the Nueces and Rio Grande rivers was disputed territory. Mexico had never acknowledged the Texan claim to the territory, and this was well known at that time throughout the United States. Go back and read the portions of Grant's Memorirs which i quoted.

MM, you're just makin' it up as you go along.

Well, if they gave Texas back, I could live a whole lot better on the money I make. Count me in favor.

Why do you say that JTT? Are you proposing we stop patrolling our borders, dismantle Customs, and just let anybody in?

You calling me a nut case?

Interesting that you ascribe your distasteful views to a majority of Americans.

Oh well, everybody's the hero in their own drama and rationalizations are a dime a dozen, I suppose.

Apparently now it is distasteful to oppose illegal immigration and to support the border patrol?

What part of Mars did you say you were from again?

No, it's distasteful to be a bigot and then to whine about being called one when that fact is brought up.

As others before have suggested, you need to grow up.

So I'm a bigot because I say Mexicans are the biggest problem in illegal immigration?

There's an awful lot of folks who are getting very tired of the race ploy that liberals keep pulling out of their ass.

Time for you to grow up, or at least get a clue.

There are literally thousands of illegals crossing from Mexico into the U.S. daily. If you show up to try and help stem the tide, like the Minutemen have done, you will be picketed by people like the pro-illegal types you find here, who will call you racist.

That's their big line. My take on it is as soon as you pull that argument out, you have lost the debate. It's all they have, because none of the other arguments, save for stupidity passing for compassion, hold water.

No, you're a bigot when you make derogatory statements about people based on their heritage.

You're either incredibly dense or incredibly duplicitous when you act as though you don't understand this simple fact.

In any case, you're still a bigot, clue-boy.

Oh please, Mr. Butter-Wouldn't-Melt-In-My-Mouth. Go back and take a look and you figure it out. Maybe your nonsense is acceptable to the rest of your klavern, but I venture to guess most Americans-- whom you're so quick to cite as being on "your" side-- would recognize the bigotry for what it is. Strive for the same awareness.
