Well I hope the Democrats can save Saddam

Quote:
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has told the BBC he expects Saddam Hussein to be executed by the end of 2006.

why not? He could be very useful. Just the sort of firm hand Iraq needs at the helm to hold it together.

Are you suggesting we give saddam back his throne. I should also remind you that he was found guilty and condemned by an Iraqi court. In addition the Iraqi's and the surrounding nations do not share your aversion to capital and or corporal punishment.

i thought we were bringing "western values" to iraq and the rest of the middle-east ?
is the death penalty one of the western values we want those countries to learn about ?
(not that i believe that SH was a particularly nice fellow . i do think however that he may be able to relate a few interesting stories that may be somewhat embarrassing to the western nations .
perhaps better kill him before he "spills the beans" ?)

Being the barbarians we are here in the US, we still have the death penalty. Why shouldn't Iraq?

No. Pretty happy without that sh!t.

I just don't think that "because the United States have [xyz], too" is a very good argument for anything....

I understand, the US has done nothing for Europe and our big ol' weapons have just endangered the fine people that inhabit Europe and made their lives less safe.

As an American, I would like to apologize for being so good at what we do.

Thanks for fighting Hitler and the USSR.

Rolling Eyes

Back to the topic at hand. Apparently, you are saying that what's good for the United States is good for Iraq. Nobody should condemn the death penalty in Iraq, because the US has it, too. Right?

Let me ask you an easy question: Do you think that Iraq should have an arsenal of nuclear weapons, now that it's a democratic country? You know, after all, the US have WMD, too.

No, I asked why Saddam should be spared. I did not say that what's good for the US is good for Iraq, I said we have capitol punishment here and they have it there.

Your juvenile strawmen bring nothing to the conversation.

No, you didn't ask why Saddam should be spared. You asked why Iraq shouldn't have capital punishment.

What makes you believe that we have the right or obligation to tell the Iraqi's that they should not hang Saddam. Remember his crimes and brutality was visited against them not us. Would you tell those who suffered and had families killed by the Nazi's if it had come up to spare Hitler?

I, for one, would tell people to spare Hitler (had he not poisoned, shot and burned himself), even though my family had suffered...

au, Your opinion is similar to mine; opinions about CP must be relegated to the victims, not what third party opinions prefer. The victims of the WTC showed us both sides of this issue as is the reality; some forgive, and some wants revenge. Their "voice" has more meaning and relevance.

i thought my questions were pretty straight-forward :

"i thought we were bringing "western values" to iraq and the rest of the middle-east ?
is the death penalty one of the western values we want those countries to learn about ? "

i didn't realize my questions were that difficult .
so perhaps i'll re-phrase my questions :
"is one of the objectives of the war in iraq to bring western values to the country ? " .

perhaps we can go on from there and discuss what might be seen as (western) values .
