Mr. Stillwater initially said that the highest Misery Index was during Reagan's tenure. I provided evidence that he was in error. The highest Misery Index was in Carter's term ---20.76. Reagan began at 17.97 and by the end of his second term had lowered the Index to 9.57. If he views my link to the US Misery Index he will find that the LAST REPORT WAS FOR 2004. The 2005 year is not completed yet so there can be no report given for 2005.

Now, let us review the figures for the YEARS WE HAVE AT PRESENT.

The first four years of Clinton's first term vis a vis the first four years of Bush's first term. We cannot, of course, compare the first year of Clinton's second term with the first year of Bush's second term since there is NO REPORT YET MADE FOR 2005

CLINTON BUSH

1993- 9.87 2001- 7.59

1994- 8.71 2002- 7.37

1995- 8.40 2003- 8.26

1996- 8.34 2004- 8.21

These figures clearly show that the misery index for the Clinton's first term were in every instance HIGHER than the first four years of Bush's first term. WHEN THE FIGURES COME OUT FOR 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008, THEN COMPARISONS of those years with 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 can be done.

There is a steady decline from 9.87 probably from the Bush I to 8.34 while for Bush II there is a steady rise from low of 7.59 from Clinton 8.21.

OK, I'll bite, for the heck of it ...

Comparing the first four years of Clinton and Bush Jr.

CLINTON: In 1993, the misery index went down: -0.65
BUSH: In 2001, the misery index went up: +0.24

CLINTON: In 1994, the misery index went significantly down: -1.16
BUSH: In 2002, the misery index went down, but a lot less : -0.22

CLINTON: In 1995, the misery index went down: -0.31
BUSH: In 2003, the misery index went up significantly: +0.89

CLINTON: In 1996, the misery index went down: -0.06
BUSH: In 2004, the misery index went down: -0.05

Clinton wins thrice, and one draw.

nimh- I am very much afraid that you are engaged in what some would call --sophistry.
You are indeed correct that there was a difference in the RATES at which the Misery Index fell or rose for Bush and Clinton during the first four years of their tenures( the only years that can be measured thus far since the index for 2005 had not been calculated)

HOWEVER, IT IS A FACT------FACT(a truth which is know by observation) that matching the first four years of President Bush's Misery Index with President Clinton's Misery Index clearly shows that Bush's Misery Index IS LOWER THAN CLINTON;'S IN EACH YEAR.

Any movement up or down in rate MAKES NO DIFFERENCE TO THE FACT THAT Bush's Misery Index is LOWER than Clinton's is each year.

You are invited to speculate about the future comparisons of Misery Indices for the two presidents and your speculations may indeed prove to be correct but the speculations are NOT FACT UNTIL THEY ARE RECORDED AND THE PERIOD OF TIME IS PASSED.

View the Yearly salaries of two men for four years( real dollars)- One has retired and the other is still working.

Peter Paul

2001 $42,000 $36 ,000

2002 $43,000 $39,000

2003 $44,000 $42,000

2004 $45,000 $44,000

It is clear that Paul is rapidly approaching Peter's salary level and, he may indeed pass him in the future BUT for the RECORD AT PRESENT, PETER'S SALARY IS HIGHER THAN PAUL'S FOR EVERY YEAR.

And what, might I ask, does this sophistry have to do with the title of the thread?

It has to do with Mr. Stillwater's claim on November 22nd that the Misery Index was the highest it had ever been during Reagan's term. I am very sorry but I cannot allow egregious errors like that pass without correcting them.

Now, if you wish, you are more than welcome to make further comments about the speech!

It rather has to do with Mortkat's uninformed, ignorant and ultimately completely false claim on November 22nd:

Mortkat wrote:
The Germans obviously need some good Economists( I suggest drawing from Harvard) to fix thier atrocious economy which causes a 10% inflation rate.

He didn't realize and didn't bother to find out about the German inflation rate, which has, unlike the American inflation rate, never been above 2% in years. Of course he couldn't admit his mistake, which is why he retired to the lame stance of trumpeting the "misery index" as the sole important benchmark test for an economy.

I am very sorry but I cannot allow egregious errors like that pass without correcting them.

Yes, that is correct, I misspoke, That should have been unemployment rate for Germany- Not inflation rate.
