Walter Hinteler does not know that the first University included in the list

http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2005/ARWU2005_Top100.htm

that is in Germany is the University of Munich in 51st place.

It is obvious that the Germans under Der Fuhrer drove out or killed most of the citizens that possessed sufficient intellect to provide Universities that would be ranked among the top ten or even the top fifty.

The Germans obviously need some good Economists( I suggest drawing from Harvard) to fix thier atrocious economy which causes a 10% inflation rate.

I doubt that Walter Hinteler has ever gone near a University that is anywhere close to the quality of the University of Chicago. He probably is unaware of the large number of Nobel Prize Winners in Economics who have issued from that University.

Attempts to denigrate American Universities are foolish especially given the fact that so many people from other countries( Yes. even Germany) clamor to be admitted.

You don't know at all what I know - and you have really a lot of that lack of knowledge.

But it's a good sign that you don't bother to show that openly.

Englishmajor, I am very much afraid, should do some reading outside of her major field.

If she did, she would discover that not only does the USA contain the best Universities in the world but that the USA has contributed a large share of significant human accomplishments.

Charles Murray's book- "Human Accomplishments"
outlines a great many significant discoveries in many fields. I will offer( and of course, there are other listings in other fields) the area of Biology as an example:

Beginning with 1900--

1900- Austria- Karl Landsteiner discovers blood types

1900 _Germany, Austria, Netherlands-Karl Correns Erich Tschermak, and Hugo DeVries independently rediscover patterns of heredity found by Mendel and apply them to Darwin's theory of Evolution

1901- Netherlands- Hogo DeVries's Mutation Theory applies mutation to evolution

1902- England- William Bayliss and Earnert Starling discover secretin, the first hormone, and its role as a chemical messenger

1907- USA- Ross Harrison achieves the first tissue culture, demonstrating the development of nerve fibers from neural tissues

1909- Denmark- WIlhelm Johannsen introduces the word gene for the unit of inheritance and distingues between genotype and phenotype, backed with experimental evidence.

1910- USA- Thomas Morgan discovers sex- linked characterisitics

1911- USAThomas Morgan and Alex Sturtevant prepare the first chromosome map, showing the five sex-linked genes in the fruit fly

1915- England and France- Felix d' Herelle and Frederick Twort independently discover bacteriophages

1915- USA- Thomas Morgan proposes that chromosomes contain genes that determine heredity

1926- USA- Thomas Morgfan discovers that mutant characteristics in fruit flies are connected to paired Mendelian genes which are joined to chromosomes.

1927- USA- Herman Muller discovers that X-Rays produce mutations

1929- Germany- Johannes Berger invents electroencephalography.

1935_USA- Wendell Stanley crystallizes the tobacco mosaic virus demonstrating that crystallization is not a dividing line between life and non-life

1937- England-Hans Krebs discovers the Krebs cycle of citric acids and its role in metabolism

1944- England- C. W, Bunn discoer the structure of Penicillin

1944- USA- Oswald Avery discovers that DNA is the genetic material in cells

1948- USA - John Enders develop a method to culture viruses.

**************************

The list above is in Biology. The listing for the US discovery in Technology is even more impressive.

englishmajor and perhaps others may not be aware that President George W. Bush is a graduate of the MBA program from Harvard--a degree which was given from a school that, at the time he attended, was held to be the best and most pre-eminent MBA program in the USA.

Now, there are some who will denigrate this degree and its source. I am very much afraid that those who will do this know NOTHING about the MBA progam as offered at Harvard.

There have been critics who maintain that "influence" was predominant in the granting of the prestigious and DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN degree to George W. Bush. They are unaware that an MBA degree at Harvard requires not only a great deal of independent work using esoteric sources but also a standard of individual excellence in class under the questioning of professors and fellow students during case explications.

It is clear that Harvard can be said to be a University which is fairly impervious to "influence". Indeed, when a student whose father had massive influence as well as a great deal of money attempted to cheat in a Spanish test, no amount of influence was able to get him immediately reinstated. He was summarily expelled. The student was the Chappaquiddick kid--Ted Kennedy.

Walter- Don't leave us in suspense. Share the knowledge with us or, better yet, rebut my post about Germany. Are you afraid we won't understand your rebuttal? Try.

Lord Ellpus is correct. It was not the debating skills of George W. Bush that won the day over the massive intellects of AL Gore and John Kerry but, I am very much afraid, were enough to cause the people of the USA to vote him in as President.

Again, how could a man, who, if we view the comments by those on this thread who denigrate him, can barely speak extemporaneously, even score ANY POINTS AT ALL in such debates?

Thank You, Walter Hinteler. I did not realize that Germany had such a low rate of inflation.

Did you ever hear of the misery index, Walter?

The misery index is a measure which takes the rate of inflation and combines it with the rate of Unemployment.

If we take the German 1.6% Inflation and combine it with the German 10% unemployment rate, we get a misery index of 11.6%

On the other hand, if we take the US inflation rate of 3% and combine it with the Unemployment rate of 5%, we get a misery index of 8%

Quite a difference.

However, Walter Hinteler, I am sure that you agree that the bottom line is not the inflation rate or the Unemployment measure but rather the all important Gross Domestic Product.

according to

http://www.cia.gov/publications/factbook/rankorder.2004rank.html

The GDP of the United States was $40,100 per capita( second in the world behind Luxembourg) while Germany's citizens struggled along at $28,700 (ranking 24th in the world). It would appear that the lack of productivity stemming from the ridiculous demands of the German Unions may have doomed Germans to maintain a status in GDP closer to French Polynesia than to the USA.

Is that why Europeans love to criticize the USA? Envy?

Mr. Stillwater- May I remind you that it is against the rules to make sport of one's name? Are you so lacking in ability that you must resort to childish commentary about names?

Read my post. Rebut it if you can. Most of the left wingers on these threads appear to be incapable of showing where I made errors.

I posted on the "Misery Index" Was I mistaken? Show me how.

I posted on Bush at Harvard. Was I mistaken? Show me how.

If you cannot, please begin your posts addressed to me with the comment--I will not address the substance of the post--and I will be glad to scroll through it.

Thank you-sir!!

Walter Hinteler- Is there a reason that you have not complained about the presence of American Troops on German soil? Is it because they spend so much money in Germany?

Yeah, yeah.... whatever, Don't call your self a 'catto el-morto' if you don't want any negative feedback.

Far out - did you know that the very WORST this 'misery index' ever was happened during the Reagan Administration?! Off the meter it was - and he hadn't even started on that Savings and Loans debacle then....

Is your name really Stillwater? Well, that's how I will address you. My name is really Mortkat.
If you profess civility, you will address me as Mortkat. I will, of course, address you as MR. Stillwater.

Now, to your comment on the Misery Index. I have read a great deal on Economics, Mr. Stillwater, and I must point out that, unfortunately, you are mistaken when you say that the WORST "misery index" happened during the Reagan administration.

Since I try to be careful in my research, I refer you to information I have in my file

http://www.miseryindex.us/indexbyyear.asp?Print=true

It states that the "Misery Index under the unfortunate Jimmy Carter was a stunning 20.76 in 1980. It fell in the first year of Reagan's term to 17.97( still very high) but by 1988 was down to 9.57.

Of course, Presidents do not have total control of the Nation's economy. The Chairman of the Federal Reserve is much more important than the President in that regard.

As long as we are talking about the misery index, it is instructive to compare the four years of Clinton's first term with the four years of Bush's term

MISERY INDEX

1993-9.87 2001-7.59

1994 -8.71 2002- 7.37

1995-8.40 2003-8.26

1996-8.34 2004-8.21

Interesting link, that.

For example, it shows that the misery index kept falling throughout 6 out of 8 Clinton Presidency years ...

and that its been higher these past two years under Bush (2003/2004) than it had been ever since 1996.
