Yeah, but they still punish good drivers because of bad ones.
True. I get a deal because I am a good driver. But I guess they don't cut deals with the younger age group, eh?
Not here they don't. I have good rates as well because I have a perfect record, but the young boys here don't stand a chance in getting a car when they get their license.
I have a perfect record as well and my sister gets me good rates through a friend of hers but they still rip you off
cjhsa, I am not particularly talking about you, just saying speaking from a point-of-view of someone that comes from a town where everyone is curtious of each other on the road and then we get our tourists that come and take over, those are what i hate. my best friend has a BMW, it isn't them per se it is that drivers. also i don't drive a volvo.
of course they rip you off. They rip everyone off.
i pay 1000 dollars for full coverage and i have a perfect record but because i am under 25 I don't get any sort of deal or lower rate, it really breaks the bank!!!!
I have three cars, two drivers, both 40, both with perfect driving records. $1100/6-months.
When I first moved to California in the early 80's, I had my at the time "new" BMW and I paid $2400/year just for me and that car. Talk about getting ripped.
It also depends on the vehicle so aimeemarie123 and cjhsa what do you drive.
I have an old BMW 3-series, an Acura Integra, and a Chrysler van (kidmobile).
My rates are $800 a year, but I'm 39 with a perfect driving record and a 1987 Olds. I just bought an old car and put a new motor in it since I refuse to dump truck loads of money every year on a car.
My rate for just liability is a little more than $600/year.
You know, it'a kinds of funny that the most fair and perfect automobile insurance company is one that would charge each driver the exact amount that driver collected for collisions. The three-crasher would pay through the nose, say about $9,000. Plus a certain percent for overhead and profit. The flawless drivers would pay nothing.
What would be the point of insurance?
we are not asking for a perfect world but im pretty sure my insurance company is making truck loads of mone that they do nothing but sit on.
Data is good. Would anybody enjoy some nice data about insurance?
When I was 18, single, male, buying my first car, a sports car classified next to Porche's and Ferrari's (a used Mazda RX-7), 80% financed and requiring full comprehensive and collision insurance ... this is what I found.
I called about 40 insurance agencies for quotes:
15 refused to insure me for any price.
10 offered to insure me for $4000-6000/year.
8 offered $3000-4000/year.
5 offered $2000-$3000/year.
1 offered $1400/year.
1 offered $750/year.
The numbers are off by 1 or 2 (poor memory) but you get the idea.
It definitely pays to shop around.
There are so many different forms of "insurance"
(auto, house, medical, title, disability, renters, loan, etc, etc).
I buy insurance only when I'm forced to. I would not choose
to buy it because like a casino it's a losing proposition overall.
On the average, they make money solely *because* I lose money.
Twenty years later I've never had an accident or major illness,
but when I added up all my various payments
I've paid over $78,000 for insurance so far, *against* my will,
and received one check for the overall benefit of $7.
(for medical treatment when I tore a ligament in my knee).
I framed that check and put it on the wall
because I worked hard for that benefit!
(I figure 60-90 hours/week for more than three years of my life).
I believe I may have earned that $7,
so I'm hoping to get another $7 real soon
before I spend the entire $7 amount that they've paid me so far.
Did I mention that they paid me $7? Yeah, that was a very good $7.

"It's hard to be objective when there are so many facts in the way".
On kids and insurance:
When my kids started to drive I said "Here's the deal, I pay for your insurance until you have your first accident that's your fault or you get your first speeding ticket."
Then I showed them the bill every three months.
results.....
No accidents.
No tickets.
None.
Nihil.
Nada.
Billy, that's why it's called "insurance." If they charged people what they made in insurance claims, nobody would drive an expensive car, because not many could afford replacing a totaled/stolen car. Everyone would be driving sh!tboxes. Besides, insurance companies are out for blood...very profitable business.
My insurance isn't bad...maybe $1100-1200 a year for full coverage on a fairly high insurance car. I've got a good driving record, and it dropped $300 when I moved from one town to another. If I lived right in the city, it would most likely be $2000. I've seen people paying $3500 a yr in Boston. Rates are high here...that's what happens when you fill a city with idiots who can't drive...many don't even have US driving licenses.
Driving around here is like driving through a pinball machine. Horrible drivers, many FOB.
What's FOB? Fat Old Bitches?
