Consider a "ceritified" used car. They cost more, but you don't want to get stuck with costly repairs. Typically, people sell or trade their cars when there's something costly that needs to be done. Shady car dealers will simply resell the car as is, without revealing the problem.

In MA, you can't sell a car "as is," every car has a warranty.

Certified cars are a rip off, you're spending an extra $2K for the lame "certified" label. If you do your homework you can save $$ and get a good car.

Some people will sell a car that's in otherwise good condition when it gets close to either 56,000 or 123,000 miles on the odometer. A lot of modern cars can go much further, though you do have to check around. A certified car would be great, or one that still time left on its warranty. I'd suggest saving money & buying an even less expensive car than you were thinking, but be sure it has airbags and carry a cellphone. ;)Auctions can be amazing places to get cars as are the clearing lots of rental car places. Be sure and give the car a good once over. Open the trunk, check all the lights, kick the wheels and pressure the brakes a little both in forward & reverse when you're test-driving it. If it has a funny smell or sound, walk away. There's always another car. You might want to walk away anyway once or twice, just to get in practice for dealing during the sale. When you see the right car, you'll know it.

I also think you should get a car that has some cool features because it might as well be pleasant to drive. Because of that, I'd buy an older top-of-the-line model over a new one that is basic.

If you buy used from the owner, try to look at the place the car is normally parked. If you drove my BMW you'd love it, but if you looked at where I park it and saw the engine and gear oil stains, you'd know it needs some work. Wink

AM--Have you considered leasing? I leased a new Saturn for my last 3 years of school. The monthly payments were cheaper than what I would have paid to buy a 4-yr old car at the time. Ideally, you will have a job and therefore more money around the time the lease expires. The limitation, of course, is the mileage--most leases penalize you if you put more than 12,000 or 15,000 miles on per year. (I bought my Saturn SL1 after the lease, so the mileage didn't matter so much--it's a very good car and gets 38 miles per gallon highway)
Disclaimer: I wouldn't lease a Honda--they rip you off on the monthly payment AND on the buyout price.

hijacked, that's what this woman does to any car being driven by a business man on his cell phone, talking to his passengers over his shoulders, eating his lunch, shaving before dinner, makin a million while careening into the car in front of him on the freeway, causing a multiple car pile up, except for us, wiser, probably mostly women drivers who keep a car length in front of us per 20 mph or so on the freeway. What is it about men? They all seem to think that if they ride the bumper of the car in front of them, they'll get there faster.........sheesh!

Aimee Marie, get a subscription to Carfax - it's an online service that will give you details about any used car you may want to buy. You plug in the serial number of the car and they list details that are public record. Very neat and easy. It was a wondeful tool for me when I was buying my used car.

i have had my cousin, handy dandy, good ol' christopher go look at the honda he says snatch it up. it is golden he looked it all over and said if i don't buy it he is gonna slap me. it is $5600 it has 88,000 miles power everything moon roof a/c. fortunately my uncle (christophers dad) knows the guy who owns the dealership i am going to (very well) he said it had one owner. this car is immaculate. no dents dings or scratches. nnnnnnnnnoooooooo rust at all anywhere interior cleaner than clean. i am so psyched about this car. i would just like to see what all of you think.
i would hope my cousin is right. the only drawback, because of the mileage the warranty is only 30 days. advise please.

as for men drivers, i definitely know what you mean lola i hate it when aggressive people ride my bumper when i am going the speed limit that makes me crazy. i had a guy who was in front of me at a stop sign i was minding my own business and he decided it would be a good idea to back up Shocked needless to say he totaled my car because he had a monster truck like vehicle on very large stilts. i had a ford escort. i got out of the car made him give me his cell phone so i could call the police. then i told him that he better not try to blame it on me i am very opinionated and aggressive when i get mad.

What year is the Civic?
As far as the warranty, you can ask the dealer if he sells extended warranties. You can buy one online, too. It may or may not be worth it to you, Civics are pretty cheap to fix and generally are reliable.

Great. You can always look sadly at ol' Christopher if it doesn't hold up. Very Happy

Is it an Accord? I had one and loved it, sold it to somebody who also loved it and used to see me in town and thank me for selling it to him. They tend to have bad venting (it gets plugged up or something) and the windshield will fog up annoyingly. See if you can get them to check that before you buy.

Oops, don't know why I thought she said civic.

Cav, they clear the way because you've got those $1000 high intensity headlights and 19 inch rims on your pimped Pinto.
