Now here's something I read recently that may be of interest to folks with critters:

"Feeding garlic regularly to cats & dogs is said to repel ticks & fleas.
One clove a day for a medium-sized dog & about 2 for large dogs.
A quarter of a clove for cats.
Reduce dose if the animal gets diarrhoea"(!)

Homemade flea powder:

1 part pyrethrum flowers, dried & ground

1 part talcum powder

Combine.

Dust onto critter's fur (outside!)
Store in a sealed dry container in a cool, dark place.

Sage 'toothpaste':

Sage can be rubbed on the teeth, as a combined toothbrush & toothpaste.

Dried sage leaves, mixed with a little oil or water or salt, can be used instead of toothpaste.
This is said to lessen gum disease as well as clean the teeth.

The Bicarbonate of Soda seems to be doing the trick nicely, Ellpus. Thanks!

Now I'm trying to remember if there was some home remedy for hives somewhere earlier in this thread. Very humid & oppressive here at the moment!

Glad it worked, msolga.

Re. the hives thing...I'll bm this, as a colleague of mine suffers terribly during the summer and she's tried everything, but to no avail.
Her name is Sasha, but during August, she's just known as "Sash the rash".
If you find anything that works, I'll pass the info on.....

Moisturiser/Barrier Cream:

I tablespoon lime juice.
I tablespoon avocado oil
3 tablespoons rose water (from the supermarket)
3 tablespoons glycerine (from the supermarket)
1 tablespoon lavender essential oil

Combine all ingredients in a jar & shake well. Omit lime juice if it stings around the eyes. Reduce avocado oil if your skin tends to be a bit ouly.

One for the steak fanciers:

To tenderise a tough steak (or other meat): lay slices of kiwi fruit on it for about 4 hours. (I assume in the fridge)
Warning: don't eat the fruit afterwards <gag!> as it may be contaminated by bacteria!

Rosemary:

Apparently rosemary does stimulate the memory! (I must try this! )

Tip: keep a sprig of rosemary on your desk & rub your fingers on it from time to time.

Rosemary oil for headaches: rub a little into the temples.

Hives & itches: my own (temporary relief) solution for hives, discovered during a just-passed, very oppressive heatwave - a witch hazel spray I came across when fossicking around & looking for something that night provide a bit of relief.

>squirt!<
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Terrific! Very Happy

Just had to re-apply it every few hours or so.

.... & I believe aloe vera can take the itch out of all sorts of skin afflictions, Ellpus. (good for burns, too.) You just break a bit off your trusty plant & rub it on the itchy or burnt bit. Ah, relief! Very Happy

Here's a tip I picked up yesterday.
I took a favourite old silver necklace to my usual place to do a few alterations to the length of the chain. I mentioned that part of the chain & various dangley dood-daddy bits had blackened, as silver often does. No amount of rubbing with the silver cleaning cloth had managed to do a proper clean-up job. The best cleaning agent for this type of thing, according to the woman in the shop, is toothpaste. Yes toothpaste! According to her, a little toothpaste applied with an old tooth brush is the very thing to clean entrenched "blackness" from silver. I haven't tried it yet, but I'll report back when I do!

A favourite old hippy-ish dangly silver necklace had become quite tarnished in parts of the chain, & particularly awkward & fiddly to clean with my silver cleaning/polishing cloth. The solution, according to my jeweller? A good clean & rinse with toothpaste! And that solution was suggested again today, in a little book of organic alternatives to all sorts of everyday needs which I've borrowed from the library. So I'm gonna try it! I will report back!
