I do agree that, in the privacy of a relationship, the conversation can turn to the "c" word, and that is the business of those involved.

I'll give you that agreement . . . but I know how men in groups talk, and the "c" word is never used in a "nice way." It is always spoken of with extreme vulgarity, so much in fact that it would provoke a bunny. Rolling Eyes

Hmmmm - yes - I know all about THAT, WilliamHenry!

Nonetheless, I think words can be reclaimed in some contexts.

I knew a woman -- a very prim and proper type -- (and I "knew" her in the Biblical sense) -- who enjoyed being told her c--t was beautiful.

It excited her to hear the word -- and the sex was great as a result.

I acknowledge right here that the anatomical properties in question are very stimulating to me -- and apparently to most men. That probably accounts for the number of porno magazines and flicks that pay huge amounts of attention to display of that area.

The fact that the word is taboo -- that the sound of a single word offends -- is probably even more insulting to society than the use of the word.

If in reasonable conversation someone can refer to an "ear" without provoking outrage -- then someone should also be able to refer to various other areas of the anatomy with equal freedom. And if one can refer to a "vagina" -- why on Earth would it be offensive to call it a ****?

Although I'm not a fan of the C word, I think that calling a vagina a c--t is not offensive. What's offensive is calling a woman a c--t. Similarly, calling a man a dick is not exactly complimentary.

Overall, I think that the intent of the usage can vulgarize a word far more than the word itself.

Frank, I think dlowan already covered that one:

dlowan wrote:
WH - I cannot illustrate because, in this context, the words would be seen as highly offensive. Within the context of an extremely intimate relationship I do not find them so - I think this mirrors the contextual appropriateness or inappropriateness of actual behaviours.

What is perfectly appropriate in a sexual relationship in privacy is not appropriate in public, nor is its verbal quivalent appropriate on a public board.

While there are things I'll happily do in private, I don't necessarily want to see the people seated next to me at the dinner party doing those things in plain sight.

Th gf and I figured out the difference between an asshole and a dick some night last week.

An asshole can be funny.

A dick never is.

(When discussing people, of course. The anatomical dick can be very funny...)
