I hope the pants help, soz!

I'm started a new regimen today at the health club here at work. I expect to be very sore tomorrow.

I guess none of you want to hear about the sunshine and 72 degrees we're having today in Houston? (ducking...)

sore it good, mac. (is there an echo in here?)

If I had any snow, I'd throw a snowball at you but, seeing as though it's too warm to snow, I guess you're safe Laughing

Good lord, I did things today that I didn't know my body could do!

Back Hyperextensions, Split Squats, Supine Pretzel Stretch - and about 20 more - ouch. About 30 minutes of that stuff and 30 minutes on the treadmill. At least I knew how to use that!

What colourful titles for those exercises! I think I'd need diagrams... supine pretzel??

I do many similar exercises in water - find it less jarring and more fun!

Mame, lots of gloom but the setting looks gorgeous!

So far my plan of attack is working - the first week is always the easiest. I'm down three pounds and haven't really been denying myself anything. I'm working out more and paying close attention to what I eat and where I eat it. If I can maintain two of the three through the weekend and then do the same next week, I'll have a four pound buffer heading into my three day birthday weekend events.

See you later, I have a date with a treadmill.

Clary, I love my water aerobics too. I went this morning, and it's a relief to do exercises that are familiar.

Here's the supine pretzel stretch. That's not me! Very Happy

Oh that looks marginally less painful than what I was expecting! Good for you, Mac, it's certainly doing what you need it to.

Quote:
In belly dancing, seduction's in the eye of beholder
January 05, 2007

BY KATE ROBERTSON

The athlete: Hannan Sultan

Age: 27

Sport: Belly dancing

Stats: 5 foot 10, doesn't weigh herself.

Background: When it comes to belly dancing, seduction is in the eye of the beholder. Hannan Sultan was 6 years old when she saw her first belly dancer perform at Walt Disney World in Florida. "I was entranced and knew that was what I wanted to do."

There wasn't much opportunity for it, growing up in Tennessee. But at 19, she moved to the Netherlands for a year where she met a Moroccan belly-dancing instructor.

She relocated to Portland, Ore., and continued lessons there. She also studied ballet, jazz, yoga and Pilates, working odd jobs to pay the rent.

"I was bound and determined to become a professional belly dancer." she says. "I thought it was possible, but would be a bad idea."

Sultan entered and won two amateur belly dancing competitions - 2002 Professional Dancer of the Year and Ms. Belly Dancer USA 2003 - before turning professional. After five years in Portland, she arrived in Toronto with her Canadian husband and opened Hannan's Bellydance Studio on Danforth Ave.

Training: Before she became a professional, Sultan trained for three to five hours each day. Now she trains between 1- 1/2 and five hours a day and takes Fridays off.

Belly dancing is a series of isolation movements. A lot of time is spent working the core muscles and focusing on stabilizing the pelvis while relaxing the rest of the body. Controlling individual muscles allows the dancer to layer movements on top of each other. This results in good posture, poise and grace.

"Not everyone was meant to be the same size. We are individuals. Belly dancing is about appreciating that," says Sultan.

Routines: In competitions judges look for artistry, skill and presentation. It's a mix of improv and choreography. As a professional, Sultan practises a new routine for two months before performing it.

"The most challenging aspect is intertwining good technique and expression with personal style."

Nutrition: If I'm dancing and training a lot, I can eat what ever I want. I don't diet or measure my food, but I do try to eat well. I just have to look like a good version of myself."

What drives her? "It's a beautiful art form with lots of potential for personal interpretation."

Energy out: One hour of belly dancing for a beginner who weighs 130 lbs. burns about 310 calories or five Oreo cookies.

<throwing this in as the link won't work after few more days ... and I need to keep track of that Oreo information :wink: )

and now I understand where Hannan's accent comes from

I don't really know what Tennessee is supposed to sound like Confused I do know that she says belly the Egyptian way - sounds like "billy" - "now that you've engaged your billy"...

~~~~~~
I started the Egyptian Folk Dance class yesterday - I knew it would be a challenge - I just didn't realize exactly what I was signing up for - two of my instructors are in the class - and Hannan herself Shocked
We're learning more about the tradition of baladi itself - this session will be about understanding the attitudes you need to communicate when you're dancing ... so a workout and an ethnomusicology lesson all in one. I loved it, though I felt about 5 steps behind all the way through ... turns out Sunday classes are primarily for the advanced/pro level. When the instructor called me over at the end, I thought it was to suggest I try another class Sad ... naaaaah, it was to tell me she was glad I was there because she knows I'm interested and enthusiastic and very determined to learn this - and that it's clear I'm interested in the history as well as learning the moverment itself.
Nada says I'll learn this (it was a tough workout - even Hannan looked like she was really working to keep up) - we've got time Very Happy
phewwwwwwwwww
Ongoing Beginner tomorrow night - something familiar.
Great going, Mame. I don't think I want to know the details of your work experiences. :wink:
I did it! Yesterday was the first 'event' on my new approach to looking at social events and celebrations. I'm down a net 1.5 lbs from New Years Day. The total loss/gain over the two week period was 7/5.5 lbs in daily fluctuations. The first week was pretty laid back, but this past week included lunch out with friends on Wednesday, drinks and dancing with Mr B Friday night (being the designated driver helped minimize the alcohol calories), a long leisurely birthday lunch with a friend yesterday Cool , and dinner out with Mr B and the girls last night which included a single piece of cheesecake and four forks - perfect!.
I've never worked so hard to lose 1.5 lbs in my life. I went to the club 12 out of the 14 days, doing both strength training (alternating muscle groups) and cardio each time. I'm excited about this outcome though. Rather than recovering from my birthday, I'm on track to look forward to Super Bowl Sunday and another one pound or more net loss over the next three weeks. The two pounds I put on yesterday will be gone in a couple days and another couple will be worked off giving me a decent buffer heading into 2/4/07. We're hosting the Super Bowl party this year and I'll be able to control what foods go out on the buffet. I'm not used to this slow and steady stuff. I'm much more used to doing a two-week recovery and dropping a quick 8 - 10 lbs. I'm not denying myself anything, just paying attention and working out.
I'll stay with the one pound per event target. 175.5 today - 174.5 on 2/5/07. My size medium clothes are comfortable at anything below 173 which was within spitting distance yesterday morning. I fully plan on getting comfortable and staying comfortable in the very near future. Onward -->
