There is a delicious irony in quoting Howard Zinn, the alleged historian, when responding to Fd'A . . .

Incidents like that are regrettable and just blows on fire.

Meanwhile, I remember having lunch with Gloria Gaynor (I will survive) in Paris and she telling me she had a great time...

Whooda - Hermes sells bags, yes, but also thigh-high boots and leather trousers that look like this >

Hoft - Nice approach...

I have a pair of those. There's a stretch of the world-famous Veddar River (steelhead) reserved for gay fishermen.

I am hardly a member of the Oprah fan club and I will admit to a certain level of satisfaction anytime a member of the stratospheric jetset is denied a whim. Oprah certainly qualifies for membership in that club as her GDP probably exceeds that of France itself. The fact remains that Hermes' apology rings hollow in that Winfrey arrived with an entourage, was denied extra-hour admittance routinely given to the glitterati, and could hardly have been mistaken for the "North African" riffraff with whom Hermes claims to be troubled.

Love her or hate her, Winfrey has earned a certain level of respect in this country. Racial incidents and half-apologies such as these won't just fan the flames of resentment. They will add gallons of gasoline, and this will be seen as just another example of typical French behavior.

Eric Hobsbawm

Three continuities link the global US of the cold war era with the attempt to assert world supremacy since 2001. The first is its position of international domination, outside the sphere of influence of communist regimes during the cold war, globally since the collapse of the USSR. This hegemony no longer rests on the sheer size of the US economy. Large though this is, it has declined since 1945 and its relative decline continues. It is no longer the giant of global manufacturing. The centre of the industrialised world is rapidly shifting to the eastern half of Asia. Unlike older imperialist countries, and unlike most other developed industrial countries, the US has ceased to be a net exporter of capital, or indeed the largest player in the international game of buying up or establishing firms in other countries, and the financial strength of the state rests on the continued willingness of others, mostly Asians, to maintain an otherwise intolerable fiscal deficit.

The Anglican story in Haaretz
Quote:
Anglican group pressures firms backing Israeli occupation

By Reuters

LONDON - A leading body for Anglican Christians urged churches on Friday to put pressure on firms that support Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories, a measure some say could mean selling stock as a last resort.

The resolution passed unanimously by the Anglican Consultative Council, meeting in the central English city of Nottingham, also recommended the same measures for any business that supports violence against innocent Israelis.

Francis: I am not engaging in bashing on this issue, but merely addressing perceptions. Half of Europe despises Americans. Based on what? Bush, the war, American pop culture? Same difference - narrow perceptions.

Hermes could have deflated a minor incident, but instead chose that lame excuse in its "apology."

The rest will be left to Winfrey's leagues of admirers ... and, of course, the pollsters.

Oprah has planned to have a show on that rebuff in Paris, and you can bet your bottom dollar that Hermes sales will plummet. That lady has more influence than many politicians.
