Jerry Falwell's comments 45 minutes into Thursday morning's 700 Club broadcast regarding the terrorist attack: "The ACLU has got to take a lot of blame for this … I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way?-all of them who have tried to secularize America?-I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.'" Falwell's rationale is that the secularization of America has provoked God "to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve."


700 Club host Pat Robertson, who said he "totally concurs" with Falwell's assessment, has been preaching a similar message for days. "It [terrorism] is happening because God Almighty is lifting his protection from us," he said in a statement quoted by the Associated Press. "We have a court that has essentially stuck its finger in God's eye. … We have insulted God at the highest level of our government. Then, we say, 'Why does this happen?'"
