The Queen and her rep have no actual function here.
Removing them would simply cut out one source of entertainment. (which I would miss, but could replace)

And a huge expense to the Canadian tax payers!!!!! I know my kids and I could use a few extra pennies in our pay packets Wink

They don't actually cost that much. A fraction of what's been uncovered in the sponsorship scandal. Most of the what the governor-general does would continue to be done - simply by someone else. There are always ribbons that need to be cut, awards that need to be given ...

i'm not sure that the monarchy is a very costly institution. we do have to pay for the governor-general and entourage, but the office of a pesident (or similar figurehead) might not be much cheaper. we also pay the expenses when the reigning monarch (and family ?) come to pay us a visit, but i don't think that's a big deal. i do find that most of the members of the royal family simply do not understand what the life of "ordinary" people is like. i don't want to start to enumerate, but the stuff that has come from the mouths of prince phillip (that german chap !) and prince charles show that they really have little concept of life and values in the 21st century. ... but that's just my opinion, no need to start a revolution. (btw we've cheered the queen when she came to visit kingston and watched the changing of the guard, so i do speak with forked tongue). hbg

OK. This is the weirdest ad yet. Over in the ad box, there is Johnny Depp, on a horse riding forward and backward, and a big kiss floating in the air above all this. If I can plant the kiss on Johnny Depp (which in any other venue would be a serious ambition of mine) I win a pocketbook.

I defy anyone to beat that one.

(The pimple popping one was a contender...but this just looks crazy.)

Whose Thomas Moore? What is Carnation Street? Is it a Tradition for the UK to shop Saturday Morning's? I know where I live, we have a Saturday Marning Market. Because Camillia is Catholic, could be a good reason why the Wedding was postponed.

You certainly ask some questions.

You can google for most of these- but look under "Coronation Street", a TV soap.
Wales and Scotland are not part of England, but are part of the United Kingdom (UK) which many Americans refer to as "England".

I think the guy referred to earlier was Thomas More, who was put to death by Henry VIII, an earlier English monarch. Interesting story, they made it into a film. Not Henry, later.

Yes we can shop on Saturday mornings, a favourite time. Also 24 hours a day, in some places.

AH! Someone who has never heard of Coronation Street ! That alone is one very good reason to move to the USA. A Street free zone sounds very appealing.

Thomas More (1478 -1535) was one of Henry VIII's favourites, and was a devout Catholic.
When Henry wanted to marry Anne Boleyn, he asked the Pope (England was a Catholic country at that time) to annull his marriage to Catherine, his first wife, citing various reasons one being that Catherine had originally been married to Henry's older brother (Arthur), who died before he could become King.
The Pope refused, so Henry decided to break from the Catholic faith, established the Church of England, declared himself head of this Church and promptly divorced Catherine.
There was much unrest among the Catholic nobility, owing to the fact that the Pope had excommunicated Henry, and declared the new Protestants as heretics.
To bring his noblemen and clergy into line, Henry made them swear an oath of alliegance to him, recognising HIM as their leader, and not Rome.
Thomas More refused to go against his Catholic faith and did not sign the oath. He was imprisoned and was eventually beheaded on Tower Hill, which overlooks the Tower of London.

The actual fact is closer to 50%. Most isn't a very reliable percentage indicator :-) This graph is from "Monarchy Free Canada" so it may be higher than other polls, but at least it is not most of Canada..

Tony Blair would make a great President for the UK.

Dont worry....he's working on it !!

The reason I mentioned the Scotland thing with Prince Charles earlier, was because he went there immediately after the wedding and posed for
the Press, wearing his kilt. WHY??
The Scots themselves dont wear kilts as a rule, on a daily basis, so why should an Englishman by birth, who has been crowned Prince of WALES, with a strong German connection to his immediate ancestry, dress up as a stereotypical Scotsman? Purely to endear and ingratiate himself with the public.
I dont see Scottish "royalty" (Sean Connery and Alex Salmond) wearing an England Football shirt when visiting London. Nor should they.
Purely a gimmick, to my mind.

I have heard it referred to as Junior America. Laughing

I also was surprised that Wales was in England. Shocked Last time I looked there were fortifications barring the way (was a while ago). Not a completely friendly border.

My thoughts re. Charles & the wearing of the kilt -- it does seem like an affectation and is certainly expensive as all heck, but the guy is a clothes horse, after all. Mostly, I think kilts are more comfortable to wear than most people realize. Just a month or so ago I was buying some whisky for Mr. P in our local liquor store (we are a liquor-controlled state) and who should come up but three men, two in construction kilts. Eeeyikes! But they were happy, very happy and dirty. They'd obviously been wearing 'em all day. Anyway, I have seen men wearing kilts in Scotland. Not too many, but definitely in Inverness and Fort William on the streets and on Skye in the west out walking. I am not talking about street musicians with bagpipes who obviously will be wearing 'em.

Quote:
While Canadians generally approve of Prince Charles' marriage to Camilla Parker Bowles, a narrow majority in a new poll would like to see Canada's ties to the monarchy severed.

Fifty-five per cent agreed with the following statement asked in an Ipsos-Reid poll conducted for CTV and The Globe and Mail: "when Queen Elizabeth's reign ends, Canada should end its formal ties to the British Monarchy."

This is up seven percentage points from the 48 per cent who agreed with that statement in October 2002.

Public opinion polls have clearly shown Canadians' mixed feelings towards the monarchy. Some polls show a majority of Canadians, particularly in Quebec, support the creation of a republic, others show a majority favour retaining the current system. Generally however, the prevailing mood towards the monarchy suggested by most polls is one of indifference or apathy.

Quote:
Support for the monarchy in Canada dropped to record lows in the late 1990s. In the first half of the new century support for the monarchy has risen to include the majority of Canadians. However, the fact that many Canadians continue to not completely understand exactly what a "Head of State" is, or the exact nature of the Queen's current role in Canada can cause some problems in drawing concrete conclusions from poll results.
