"You seem to be against the wedding; against them changing the date of the wedding; against the inconvience that the Pope's funeral caused; against the Monarchy; against the choices of Thomas More and whatever else is happening at the time."

Thats about right Intrepid.

OK time for a little confessional.

I dont like organised religion. John Paul was an arch reactionary who condemned millions to die of AIDS in Africa through his stupid ban on contraception.

The catholic church has imo done more harm than good since Constantine.

And I think monarchy is silly.

Although I do have respect for Queen Elizabeth

-because she is Head of State
-because she takes the whole thing seriously, unlike her children who want to be royal, A list celebs, rock stars, hedonists, and be respected at the same time.

Confession is good for the soul. I am not Catholic either, but I respected Pope John Paul II for much of what he did.

The whole contraception thing goes back far beyond this Pope. Also, the Catholic population of Africa is about 17% of the African population. While in numbers this is significant (136,000,000) it is not a huge percentage. I have read that about 7.5% of the adult African population has aids How many are infected due to the Catholic Church?

It is your right to consider the Monarchy anything that you wish. That is the beauty of living in a free countries as we do. I admire the fact that you have respect for HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

We are not entirely free. We are subjects of Her Majesty the Queen. We can vote for any political party we wish, but the people we elect to represent us must swear an oath of allegiance to the principle of hereditary monarchy before they can take their seat in parliament.
Many people are ambitious for themselves or their children. But the job of Head of State is only open to those born into it. We are lucky with the present Queen. In the past we have had dangerous lunatics. There is no guarantee history will not be repeated.

On the other hand monarchy does provide a continuing source of fascination and entertainment for a huge world wide audience. But given the choice, I would rather not pay to see it.

Corruption

It would help if you used the quote function rather than typing what the poster wrote. It would eliminate confusion as to who said what ;-)

You are free enough to have the right to vote. What do you think it would be like if you did not have this right?

Would anybody really want their job? We seem to have dangerous lunatics as heads of some governments today as well. <I won't mention any names or countries :-o >

OK....you could either click on the QUOTE box and will include everything in the box....you can take out what you want etc. at this point.

Or, you could just put [ quote ] at the beginning of the information and [ / quote ] at end of the information. Be sure to leave out the spaces though.

No, that is not what the Monarchy is for, but we may as well take what we get Laughing

free country ? when do we next vote on the continuing existence of the monarchy ? even living in a 'monarchist' bastion, there are plenty of people here - including many former loyal subjects - that would vote an end to the monarchy if given a chance. why not end it all with with queen elizabeth II ? it would suit me just fine . hbg

Okay hbg, I'll buy.

We get rid of the monarchy tomorrow. What do we put in its place? Do we have a president? Who will be Britain's head of state? Who should be Canada's?

What does the Monarchy or the Queen have to do with living in a free country. You live in one of the best countries in the world with all of the freedoms that go with it. Whether there is a monarchy or not does not infringe on any of your rights or privileges. If you dislike the Monarchy so much, why did you choose a country that had one?

I am not picking on you, but sometimes it seems that people gripe for no reason other than to do it.

Quote:
Definition: The head of state in Canada is the sovereign or Queen of Canada. The Queen's powers are exercised by the Governor General except when the Queen is in Canada. The Governor General, like the sovereign or Queen, is not political and remains above politics. The role in Canada is, however, largely ceremonial.

The Queen and her rep have no actual function here.
Removing them would simply cut out one source of entertainment. (which I would miss, but could replace)
