@Walter Hinteler,
It's the first proper opposition the Russians have faced. I can't see Russia beating either Spain or Portugal.

Russia will have to play Spain, like it or not, and Portugal will have to face Uruguay.

We all know a lot of people (mostly women) think pretty boy Christiano Ronaldo looks pretty tasty.
Ronaldo is okay with that as long as Suarez isn't one of those people.

@InfraBlue,
Quote:
Peru recorded their first win at a World Cup finals since 1978 as they beat Australia in the last match of the tournament for both sides.
Peru had played eight World Cup finals matches without a win since they beat Iran 4-1 on 11 June, 1978, and this victory was only the fifth in their history.

I remember it well, England didn't qualify so all hopes were on Scotland who put in a lacklustre performance against both Peru and Iran. Despite beating already qualified Netherlands Scotland's campaign ended there as Peru went through to the next stage on goal difference.

@ehBeth,
I've heard that there was a presidential order to stop both the actual matches at half-time.

What's with all of this extra time in the Germany-S. Korea match? 10 minutes?

If the powers that be were trying to give the alemanes a chance, it backfired miserably.

Viva Mexico!!! I would have preferred a win against Sweeden, but they won enough games to advance.

El Tri knows how to beat Brazil.

@Walter Hinteler,
When the groups were drawn:
Me and my son: "Damn, we are stuck is the Group of Death".
My German daughter-in-law: "For Germany, any group is easy".

But no, no Schadenfreude here.
Not at all.

@fbaezer,
I vividly remember the Disgrace of Córdoba: since we didn't want to watch that match, father invited for a nice dinner: no tv, excellent food ...
But then they switched on the radio.

But I remember Mexico 1970 as well:
our boat was on in-port watch. On the same pier was an Italian frigate.
We had just our normal horn, and fog horns. They had an own band.
We got an extra watch by the base's command.
They won the partido del Siglo.

@Walter Hinteler,
I remember well El Partido del Siglo.
The day Beckenbauer truly won the nickname of Kaiser.

You dare talk about a Disgrace of Córdoba. In Córdoba we were beaten 6-0 by Germany.

About 10 years later, I was driving in Mexico City and my car happened to stop in a red light next to José Antonio Roca's.
Roca was the Mexican coach in 1978.
I looked at him, made the 6-0 with my hands, and made a surly face.
The poor man looked at me, grabbed the wheel firmly and looked away. I guess he was by then used to it.
He lived with that disgrace all his life.

No football today. Checked on the family - all still alive. I'll look in again in two weeks.

Roll on the knock-out stages!
