@Finn dAbuzz,
Call it xenophobia if it makes you feel better.

Races don't exist anyway. There are only ethnicities, itself an elastic concept.

@Olivier5,
Being California raised (except for NY and Chicago years) I can't fathom somehow hating the French. Yes, I've read history, more or less. The US is no sea of perfection.

Is California "anglophone"?

The french may well not like me... for my clothes sensibility. Too bad. But, I'm certainly not against their levels of style sense.

Only sneer I've run into was two German women making fun of John and myself on a train in Italy. I knew some german back then. (blinks)

Do you also believe that Jews are cheap?

They value money, because they had to move from country to country in Europe. And, they weren't allowed to own land as "wealth." I think there other other nationalities/ethnicities that have that stereotype also.

But, if you are asking me about Jews that are not U.S. born, I have nothing to say about them. French Jews are your concern, or Israel's, if they get tired of anti-Semitism in France and make Aliyah. Please stop pretending that all posters here are citizens of the world. (Catholic with a small "c," perhaps?)

They smoke less per capita than in the USA

You might be adding apples to oranges. The U.S. is a diverse fabric of people. Only the middle-class might have the health concerns that might not be evident in other social classes. If I was wrong, then why do Hollywood producers make films where the main characters smoke, knowing the film will get more sales overseas, because people like to see those that have similar habits?

Thanks Walter, but this isn't about facts. It's about prejudice. Anti-frogism remains as the last accepted, A-okay form of racism in many anglophone societies.

I thought the term is "Anglophile"? And, what genius couldn't predict that the Germans could go "around" the Maginot Line?

Priceless.

In my opinion, French Jews are different than U.S. born Jews, and Jews born and raised in NYC are different than U.S. Jews not born in NYC. My point is that Woody Allen is a product of NYC; I cannot see his evolving out of the mid-west, or elsewhere. In the military, I did meet a few Jews born and raised elsewhere in the U.S.. I was surprised to find out they were Jewish. Really quite Goyisha, "if you know what I mean" (wasn't that a favorite phrase of Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye?)

Pre-judging? What about the American right to pursue happiness, according to the Declaration of Independence. If another makes one uncomfortable, why make judgements, if they are not appropriate in the venue referred to (i.e., one who uses the WASP American culture as a role model)? Remember I do not need brownie points for Heaven or less time in Purgatory (having just seen a two hour docu-drama about Martin Luther and his railing against the selling of Indulgences).

In my opinion, you are presupposing that the values you were inculcated in are a priori correct. No one has to love me. They just have to let me live in peace. And, I can be sure that values that I have are denigrated by others raised in a more "universal" orientation (such as my being comfortable with highly competitive students for high marks, and amongst some such "striving" is considered a negative quality implying some desire for superiority).

@Foofie,
Some of us do think of ourselves as citizens of the world. Some of us have a good right to say that, but I'll forebear naming posters. Not me, I remain local and a reader, but I do read widely, travel by reading now. I've read about the world at large for decades and decades, but I forget stuff. My point is that I'm interested, however my memory fails.

You are not interested. That's fine, if boring to the max.

So.... criticizing the policies of the French government and inequality in French society makes someone a racist? Does criticizing the policies of China make one anti-Chinese... or criticizing the settlement policy in Israel make one antisemitic?

All I did was criticize policies of the French government and inequality in French society. This seems to upset you. I have no problem criticizing American policy, and your criticisms of American policy are what started us down this path. You are being rather hypocritical.

I am really anti-Nationalist. If you think that France is above reproach, than yes, I am criticizing you, not as a Frenchman but as an ideologue.

You're welcome to criticize France based on facts, not on lies. Accept accountability for spreading false information, or go to hell with the rest of the fakers.

I don't think he agrees with your claim that the facts are wrong. I doubt that Max would intentionally say something untrue, but if he remains unconvinced then he will probably stick to his existing position.
