Bernie’s crime
———————-
Excerpt:
The independent Vermont senator added that those who managed campaign volunteers did not think the stipend would prohibit the students from serving as volunteers.

The fine was paid to the Federal Election Commission, which had responded to a complaint, and Sanders said the fine was paid in order to avoid a “long and expensive fight.” However, he said the campaign did not “agree that it broke any rules.”

Those Australians who are at the center of the controversy worked on Sanders' campaign in New Hampshire during the presidential primary and received a total of $24,422 to for airfare and stipends. The payments were considered foreign contributions, which violates U.S. law.

@Lash,
The prohibition includes services (anything of value), voluntary or not. I mean it is pretty plainly written in the rules, I think someone just slipped up.

@revelette1,
None of us want to hear what I’m thinking about this.

It's so minor, except establishment Dems use anything that comes to hand to stifle progressives.

@edgarblythe,
Why are establishment democrats involved at all? If you are referring to Howard Dean, he is pretty much a flake.

@Lash,
It makes it hard for Sanders supporters to criticise Trump's relationship with Russia. It may sound fairly innocuous, but it's still illegal. If you're not squeaky clean you're in a quagmire of your own making.

Somebody on his campaign team should have spotted this and stopped it happening.

@revelette1,
They were a bit naive thinking that no one would be looking for something wrong (however minor).

Quote:
William O’Brien, the Republican former New Hampshire House speaker, filed the complaint with the FEC that led to the fine, according to local radio station WMUV, which first reported on the ruling.

Project Veritas strikes again.

Quote:
O’Brien had seen a video, filmed by Project Veritas, of Australians pulling up yard signs during the campaign. As it turns out, O’Brien’s hunch was right.

Project Veritas is the same organization that tried to bait the Washington Post last year into reporting on a fake news story about a woman who falsely claimed failed Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore impregnated her. (The Post didn’t bite.)

@revelette1,
He’s part of the establishment core that are trying to undercut the progressive surge and punish Sanders for calling bullshit on them.

@Lash,
Maybe he is, but that doesn't alter the fact that Sanders' team did something illegal. They will bang on about this.

I don't know how much, if any, damage it will do but maybe it's time for Sanders to pass the torch to someone younger, someone with less baggage.

@izzythepush,
I don’t think he’s holding that torch. It’s been super-glued in his hand by people like me who can’t find the qualities that attracted us to him in anyone else.

Still, when voting time comes around again, I expect a huge progressive convulsion toward a candidate—Bernie or other.

@izzythepush,
I should say here that if Bernie Sanders doesn’t have moral authority in Washington, no one does.

@Lash,
You know what the right wing press is like. Jeremy Corbyn has been smeared because he met a Czech diplomat during the Cold War. Said diplomat has come up with a cock and bull story about Corbyn being a spy. There's no substance to it, the Czech government have confirmed it's bs, and the Tory MP who repeated smears has had to apologise, but that doesn't stop the gutter press.

You think the likes of Fox and co won't blow this up out of all proportion?

@izzythepush,
Hoping it’s only the openly right-wing press. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if the msm doesn’t join in.

I’m very happy to hear about amends made to Corbyn.

Re Bernie Sanders.

The 2700 capacity seating in San Antonio was sold out in one hour of his announcement to attend. It is free, but it is also in Texas.

ICYMI: This is an old, crotchety, finger-wagging, Jewish, Democratic Socialist.

In Texas.
