Did you ever get your hands on the unrated copy of that opinion? Wow! According to a section jointly written by O'Connor and Stevens, the "Federal Bench," despite mistaken common usage, actually refers to a discrete object, not unlike a love-seat. Apparently, the "Bar" also refers to a trapeze like apparatus in a secret dungeon below the Court. I won't ruin it for you, but it seems that gavels have multiple uses!
