What made me smile?
A day off work! I was so tired last night that I fell asleep with all my clothes on, windows & back door unlocked..... A sure sign that I needed some time off from the grind!
But the bad news is that I have to get seriously stuck into writing many, many reports over the next 3 days. Right now I'm procrastinating, the A2K way! Very Happy

Yay snow!

Wish we had some.

I found out today that wooden blocks fit exactly in the pattern on our oriental rug. This was very pleasing, somehow.

That and the many rousing renditions of "Mama, the Red-Nosed Lady."

LOL!

The best laughs come as a guffaw by utter surprise. You gave me a laugh like that with this bit ;-)

Shaq gave me a grin, too. Ice Cube for president, heh - I'd go for it. Flavor Flav as Secratary of State might be a bit much, though ;-)

Realjohnboy, that was a beautiful little description ...

Can't believe how much there was to read up on in this thread. Poor thread of mine, I've sure been neglecting it ...

Drove to The Big Apple

http://www.bigthings.ca/ontario/pictures/apple1.jpg

to meet hamburger and mrs. hamburger, and accept delivery of Cleo and Bailey who were at sleep-away camp with Oma and Opa for 2 weeks. Seeing all 4 of them made me smile.

Seeing the lightly snow-covered fields on the way there made me smile.

Seeing the huge snow clouds on the other side of Lake Ontario, seemingly parked, made me smile.

Walking the dogs tonight made me smile. I've missed them.

Hearing that Setanta is feeling better today made me smile.

Seeing that Kay's car was out of the driveway tonight made me smile.

Kay is one of my neighbours. She's 87 years old and full of beans. She had a double knee replacement in the early fall and hadn't been able to get out to her beloved senior's dances for a while. When I saw her car out of the driveway yesterday, I started to grin. It meant she had her regular Friday morning hair appointment, to get ready for the Saturday night dance. Tonight, Kay's out dancing again. She's a delight to know, and I'm so glad she's out flirting and dancing with the lads again. (She loves nothing more than when someone is turning 65 or 70 or 75 at her club. Their families tend to sponsor extra dances then!)

Wilso, congratulations, you seem like an ideal uncle.
Dys and I have been stuck inside with colds and coughs. Bleh. This thread is good medicine.

seeing Setanta pinch a hedge butt made me smile. Sheeeeze, Beth. Knowing that HCE/Beedle has a girl friend also made me smile. Trying to be objective on a porno thread made me laugh out loud...

Has hamburger learned to do the dead man's float yet? Smile

The neighbour - an older woman who we always thought was grumpy, but turns out to actually just be rather shy/awkward - came down to bring me a Sinterklaas chocolate letter and "speculaaspop". "I got it today but I've lready eaten so much, I thought perhaps you would want it, you can share it with Anastasia".

Website that made me smile: the Chickenology Encyclopedia. Why did the chicken cross the road?

Some of these are even funny. (Not all). The Irish answers page made me grin for a moment, for example:

Quote:
Sinn Fein: That would be a matter for the chicken. Sinn Fein and the chicken are not part of the same organisation, although we share some ideals in common. If there are presently any chickens in Sinn Fein, we are not aware of it.

UK Home Secretary: Members of the Special Air Services involved in a covert anti-terrorist operation on the road at 8:42 this morning observed the chicken attempting to cross the road. As the chicken was approached by one of the soldiers involved, it was seen to make a threatening movement and action was taken to nullify that action. It has not been ascertained why the chicken was crossing the road, and it seems unlikely that we will now discover his motive.

Well, et cetera. Attributions of other answers range from 11th century Arab pilosophers to Donald Rumsfeld, Gloria Estefan, Tacitus, Tigger and Mr. T.

Heh.

I took out my "Anthology of the Russian Literature of the 1920s" - and made some myself. Haven't sent them in yet, though.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

LEF (Leftist Front of the Arts, collective of revolutionary Soviet poets):

Quote:

- "The Revolution had taught it much."

- "We believe that the correctness of our propaganda and the strength of our works will prove it is on the true path to the future."

All-Union Association of Proletarian Chickens (VAPP):

Quote:

- "It had realised that the task before it was not the cultivation of modes of movement that existed in bourgeois times, but the cultivation and revelation of new principles and types of movement, obtained by means of a practical mastery of the old modes of movement and the transformation of them by means of a proletarian class content, and also by way of a critical interpretation of the rich experience of proletarian modes of movement in the past."

Why do chickens cross roads?
(Two parodies)

Vladimir Mayakovsky piss-take:

Quote:

The chicken!
Mighty beast
He walks on
Heaven's, Non-existant,
taunting tracks!

See this, Mister God!
With your dripping fat eyes
tearing your teeth at
innocent chickpea thighs!

Ha!

Once again - I take my
downcast heart,
shake my shaggy head ...
Night will come, darkly -
and devour you, chicken-Mary!
Hurry!
Hurry across the road of
Rebellion, and wear
the Revolution's thorny crown!

Vladimir Kirillov / The Smithy poets piss-take:

Quote:

They are the countless, dread legions of Poultry.
They are the conquerors of paths, roads and streets.
They have set cities alight with the passion of their cackle
Their proud souls burn with the fire of rebellion strong.

They have overthrown the weight of their oppressive inheritance,
There is no limit to their proud daring now
They are gripped by a terrible, passionate intoxication,
Maidens, in the radiant kingdom of the Future ...

Their tears have run dry, tenderness has been slain,
They have forgotten the scent of grass and spring flowers,
They love the power of truck engines and the might of steamrollers
The song of sirens and the motion of wheels ...

The tendons of their little legs long for a gigantic task,
The collective chickenbreast burns with creative suffering,
We will find another, dazzling path for our planet,
We are God, Judge and the Law!
