I got an email from an old high school boyfriend through the Classmates website. It's been 34 years and he's still not over me.

What's up with the ex-boyfriends and Classmates website??? Yet another ex from high school, my first love, sent an email and requests that I get in touch with him. He sent his e-mail address AND his cell phone. Rolling Eyes
This just tickles me silly but the idea of actually responding is ridiculous. Why would I? What could they possibly want after all these years?

eoe, perhaps, just maybe, could it be that they want to reconnect with their past? It may not be what you're thinking. maybe it'd be fun to talk about things done, clothing worn, music listened to........ maybe they don't want to get back with you - or do they say they do?

Isnt there this scene in High Fidelity where homeboy, having just been dumped by his gf and slumped into something of an existential crisis, picks up the idea to look up all his exes and find out about ... well, just find out?

Theres this hilarious/awkward moment then, when he looks up one girl he'd been with for a little bit, who turns out to have done really, really well in just about everything, and when he turns up asks him: "you're not on one of those talk-with-all-my-exes-and-find-out-about-things trips, are you? What is it with men that at this age they suddenly all do that?"

Homeboy stridently denies, of course, and tries to comport himself laid-back and confidently ... but, ouch.

Then again, that was about thirty-somethings, of course...

A new Governor-General has been announced here. I'm quite pleased with the choice, and the announcement itself was quite wonderful. Paul Martin showed the side of himself that I, on occasion, like. The new Governor-General is, I think, going to be a brilliant representative. Mme Jean, her husband and their daughter looked sooooooooo Canadian.

Quote:
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada bolstered its reputation as a country of immigrants on Thursday when a Haitian-born refugee was named as the personal representative of head of state Queen Elizabeth.

Former television journalist Michaelle Jean is the first black person ever to be nominated to the post of governor general and only the third woman.

"Her personal story is nothing short of extraordinary ... she has known what it is to come to a new country with little more than hope -- hope and a belief that with hard work a new country can bring new opportunity," said Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Jean, 48, was born in Haiti but fled with her parents to Canada's French-speaking province of Quebec in 1968. She joined public broadcaster CBC in 1988 and made her name with a series of documentaries focusing on people at the margins of society.

"I have come a long way. My ancestors were slaves. I was born in Haiti, the poorest country in our hemisphere. I am a daughter of exiles driven from their native land by a dictatorial regime," she told reporters.

Jean said she was proud to be part of Canada "with its immense and unlimited possibilities, rich with the daily contributions of people who have come from all over the world."

Canada, which has a population of 32 million, aims to attract between 220,000 to 245,000 immigrants a year and is moving away from its roots as a country made up of French and British settlers as well as aboriginals.

Statistics Canada said in March that its projections showed that Canada's population of visible minorities could more than double between 2001 and 2017, rising from 4 million to up to 8.5 million.

The post of governor general is largely ceremonial but the incumbent is responsible for settling constitutional crises.

Jean replaces fellow journalist and immigrant Adrienne Clarkson, who was born in Hong Kong.

Jean -- who will take up her new position on Sept. 27 -- is married to film maker Jean-Daniel Lafond. They have a six-year-old daughter.

Then I went to the Glob to check out the online responses and saw a post from an old colleague and friend from about 30 years ago ...

Fabulous choice, so refreshing to NOT have another old white man in the office.

There's a fantastic italian restaurant down the street. My housemate and I talked about going there for years now. She mentioned my ravings about the place to her boss and they have been planning top go there for a year. we two had made several plans to go together, but they always fell through. One of us had to bail out a relative, someone had to fly off somewhere (they are jet-setters), always something came up.

So, we had a un-plan to go tonight. We tried to sneak up on our plans so as not to be foiled again. We waited for a day where none of us was flying, or presenting, or whatever - we didn't want to damn ourselves ("No dinner, why? Oh, his plane crashed? How awful!").

And, we were off, we three were in a car going to the restaurant. Tempting fate, we joked, "maybe the restaurant burnt down!". Turns out a transformer blew out on the corner down the street from the place, causing entire blocks to lose power.

We caustiously and hopefully entered the restautant. We were greated with, "You aren't in the mood for something very cold are you?" and we were accepted in. The last table of the night. The power wasn't going to be back up until midnight, but the cooking apparatus runs on gas. The finest italian food in sometime. YES!

Cool, littlek!

I have another serendipity story. We went to the State Fair yesterday, which was great fun all around. Got to do the corny agricultural stuff (milked a fake cow, planted a free flower to take home, pet baby chickens), and sozlet got to go on ten zillion rides.

I knew there were fireworks every night but wasn't sure when. I'd thought 9:15 for some reason. At 9:15 we were at the top of the Ferris Wheel, but no fireworks. Oh well. After the Ferris Wheel, we made our way to the parking lot gradually -- first on the Sky Glider thingie (basically like ski lifts, takes you over the fair and back to the parking lot), then meandering through some concessions, and then finally to the line for the shuttle back to our car (VERY far away in the parking lot).

Sozlet was happy with her Sno-cone, waiting was going fine, when all of the sudden, BOOM, right over yonder and not far away at all were the fireworks!! So we oohed and ahhed and then the shuttle (really wagons, kind of like a hayride) showed up and we clambered on as the fireworks continued. We set off, and got closer and closer and closer to the fireworks. Big ones, quality ones, 4th of July ones, right over our heads. Eventually we got so close that we could see where they were being shot from, maybe 100 yards away. We stopped there for a while to wait for traffic, and there, in the absolute best seats in the whole place, the grand finale went off over our heads. Amazing!!! (And LOUD!)

And five minutes after that we were at our car.

Perfect.

SMSing "Susannah" right after I got back from Holland, and her calling back to set the time we'd meet up at 4:30. Met at the gallery where her two artist friends were painting and Roma musicians were playing and dancing, then left together and just walked around. Ate an icecream, had a tea, talked, jokily flirted. Shes so sweet. I have a friend here!

I've had a smile filled week or two! Wow, my neice is really finally becoming an enthusiastic 'big' girl. She's exploring her and my relationship and realizing, I think, they rshe really does actually love me.

My nephew is learning to talk as well as other wonderful things. He grabbed a nail file, grabbed one of my hands and started to file my nails! I was in silent fits of histerics, with tears rolling onto my cheecks as he patpatpatted around my chair from one hand to the other.

We saw a hawk eating a pigeon/squirrel and he mimicked my 'awsome!' and learned to say hawk.

And, I've had a couple dates with a wonderful and complicated man.

Tonight my friend Tamara is coming to visit me from Croatia! I'm getting excited; I havent seen her in, eh, four years! Shocked
