oooh, that is always the best of surprises!
i had to smile today, grin wildly rather. there is a group of fellows affiliated with our foundation, and i happen to date one, clandestinely, so that there are no gossips and the foundation management is not upset, though it is not outwardly forbidden. anyway, we just decided it is best to keep it outside, at least for now. today one of the fellows tells me, in the presence of my secret fellow: my, you look very elegant today, what is it, are you going on a date?" i must have turned purple in one hundredth of a second. MUST stop dressing up for work!

Driving down a suburban street this afternoon & there was a small boy aged about 3, sitting on his fence, all decked out in his superman outfit. He waved wildly as I drove by & of course, I tooted & waved back! Very Happy

For my birthday, I ordered an exquisite leather handbag for myself. Big, roomy, classic, kind of like a Grace Kelly-type bag but bigger, like the bag Martha Stewart carried while on trial, and got nailed for by the press. It cost me a small fortune but it's the kind of bag you'll have forever. (what the press failed to mention about Matha's bag, other than it's current 5000.00 price tag is the fact that it was 12 years old!)

Anyway, my bag arrived today. And boy was I smiling.

Tuna (w/ bread&butter pickles) sandwiches. Yummm!

Never had that pickle before. Adds the right amount of sweetness to it. Oh.so.good.

Wispy white clouds in a blue New England early autumn sky.
Leaves just beginning to turn.
Slight hint of a chill in the breeze balanced by warm sunshine.

It was hard to come back to cubeville after my lunchtime jog.

Dropped off kid at preschool. We've been hanging out with one of sozlet's classmates and her mom and baby brother (2-y-o.) I haven't been paying much attention to him, focusing on talking to the mom when sozlet isn't doing something that needs my attention. ("Hey! No throwing sand!") But today he saw me and just lit up. Huge grin ("Hiii!!!"). Unexpected, made me grin back.

I'm not sure exactly what kind of smile this is, but ...

Bailey and Cleo are smallish dogs, both very pettable these days. Bailey in particular puts up with a lot from small children who want to touch him. He doesn't care for it much, but puts up with it. One of our neighbours is a 14 month old girl who has just moved from barely toddling to runnnnnning. About 3 months ago in the transition from standing to walking, she fell over on top of Bailey and almost squashed him. Last night, we were out on our walk, when little Lana and her family group came toward us. Little Lana started to shout "joggie joggie joggie" and ran for Bailey. He looked at me with the most panicked look, turned and bolted for our porch. As he was on a leash, I had to run with him, and Cleo had to come along as well. His look of relief on reaching the porch was just marvellous. Seems he knew Lana's cousin would catch her, before she caught up with him.

So, is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind playing over there already? I assume so, it's an American movie, must have been playing there forever now. Here, it just started screening.

OK, so I havent seen Anastasia in forever, right, cause she didnt want to see me anymore. Havent talked with her forever anymore either, cause she didnt wanna talk with me anymore. But the day I returned from the conference she was on my voicemail, so I gave her a call back, and she came by briefly for a few chaotic minutes with her friend to pick up a book she wanted to borrow. Called an odd time since. Now she asked me if I wanted to go to a movie together ... Yesterday I was still sick, so instead we went tonight.

I was still in a bit of post-sick haze this afternoon when we went through the listings on the phone. She asked me what movie I wanted to see but I didnt see any, didnt know any. So we eh'ed and then I said, well there's this movie playing with the strangest name, that must be special, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". So we picked it purely on the name. Practically random, out of just fifteen movies that happen to be playing here.

Well, have you seen "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"?

Sometimes, I swear, I feel like the universe elects to spend some divine facility on playing these brilliant, conceptual jokes with me ... it leaves me awestruck, to where I dont know whether to laugh out loud or humbly bow my head.

Stasia says, that's how my life works, don't you know.

I was just reading about that as I think it's just gone to video/dvd here.

Interesting conjunction. <nodding>
Life's sometimes like that.
Weird, that is.

(Don't bother looking up anything on IMDB, it wont tell you much. Great movie, though, for anyone. Sheer, versatile, baffling, moving brilliance.)

Some seven years ago, I was a student in Budapest, and I had this mad love affair with a girl from the Mediterranean who - well, when I think back, was pretty much perfect. But of course, you know - back home, I had a girlfriend, she had a boyfriend, so we existed only in the now - a long, romantic trip through sense and discovery. Everything just - clicked; I'd never known love could be so ... easy. We went on a trip to Vienna too, just a long day or two, and we roamed the city, saw things of beauty, talked forever, kissed, had things in town just magically fall into place for us - without, by necessity, much or any mention of what was or could be, for each of us, at home.

Back in Budapest, we wanted to see a movie - I think it was either the very evening we came back or the next, we often went to the movies. There's always some fourty or fifty playing on any evening. We picked one basically purely on name or actor. It was Before Sunrise.
