What made you smile today?

Today wasn't that great; well, it was a day of extremes. It started off well, when I found out that I'm being published this April.. but
then I found out that a friend of mine from America shot herself to death, which put a downer on things.

Got another raise today, the second this week. Twas a small smile because it's not gonna last.

Met a neat Somalian guy in a taxi today. Had one of the most interesting conversations in a long time.

Danced in the bus, with a really big really drunk black guy who had a smile so big that I couldn't help but smile. He kept baning his head on the roof as we pranced around to "Sweet home Alabama".

At first I was wary of the guy, he was big (think the dude in The Green Mile) and kept drinking from his backpack. He was so big that even squished in his seat his arm was way way into my space.

He started leaning in towards me in a really odd way, I thought he was going to collapse on me or something.

He started rocking his head and then I realized he was listening to my music on my head phones.

He smiled at me and said "Sweeeeet home Alabama" with a huge grin.

We ended up dancing around the bus with half the bus singing along. even an old lady was singing and clapping and it was a surreal experience.

One of my weirdest days this year. I simled a lot today, despite it not being a good day for many other reasons.

Oh, I forgot another thing that made me smile, I got an email from someone in Brazil asking for English classes. It was from the sister of one of my favorite students that I'd thought of just a few days ago.

I was happy that the word of mouth I'd relied on to make a living was still at work after all this time, and was happy to contact my student again.

That sort of thing is a treasure forever, I think - those spontaneous moments of sheer communion! I love 'em.

AND Sweet Home Alabama....

Yeah, it was so weird and beautiful in a way that it almost made me cry for some reason that I can't understand. Even the bus driver was singing and honking. It lasted only a few minutes but has been replaying in my mind non-stop ever since.

The dude exuded that same beautiful quality as the subject in the Green Mile too. Without him that never would have happened. He had a childlike innocence that was contagious.

It was like we were suddenly a rowdy group of friends, very very weird.

Well, the evanescence and all - and that sort of innocence in a person can only end in tears?

Maybe not?

It reminded me of old movies where someone makes a whole town break out in song and dance. So weird.

I hope I can sleep tonight.

All of the drunkards who lean on me in buses and subways are far less endearing than the Green Mile Man.

You're worrying me! You said you had a bad week too!

What is making me smile is that I am on strike today! Long weekend! (CLEVER union...lol! What Australian can resist a long weekend?)

What WON'T make me smile very soon is

a. Making up the work

b. Having a small pay-slip!

Interesting. I know that this is the second time I've inquired about your backgound today, but....

Did you teach English in Brazil? Did you grow up there or go to Brazil specifically for that reason? This intrigues me. For example, how did you manage to do that without a university education? I thought it was a pre-requisite to getting into english teaching programs - or at least it is here.

Yes.

Really long story, I grew up in 10 different countries and Brazil was one of the ones I spent the most time.

The scarcity of native speakers abroad means just about any can teach ESL on some level. They need people who have native pronnunciation so as to sharpen their skills.

All ya need is coversational skills. I got paid for chatting up some of the most well educated segments of the society sometimes.

It's easily the best job I ever had, and I plan to return to it one day.

Still smiling because India won
Spoke to my ex bf, heard his elbaorate plans for going out tomorrow night to get picked up - resulted in an even wider smile
An email arrived out of the blue from a old college mate, who I had not heard from in 9 years - even more smiles....

Ok, IronLionZion, now you've got to tell us something that made you smile. You do smile every once in a while, don't you?

For me: a slightly smaller number on the scale. Very slightly. But hey, I'll take what I can get. (Or lose in this case).

Gray skies are gonna clear up,
Put on a happy face;
Brush off the clouds and cheer up,
Put on a happy face.

Take off the gloomy mask of tragedy,
It's not your style;
You'll look so good that you'll be glad
Ya' decide to smile!

Pick out a pleasant outlook,
Stick out that noble chin;
Wipe off that "full of doubt" look,
Slap on a happy grin!

And spread sunshine all over the place,
Just put on a happy face!
Put on a happy face
Put on a happy face

And if you're feeling cross and bitterish
Don't sit and whine
Think of banana split and licorice
And you'll feel fine

I knew a girl so gloomy
She'd never laugh or sing
She wouldn't listen to me
Now she's a mean old thing

So spread sunshine all over the place
Just put on a happy face
So, put on a happy face
