Hi AV, read the topic title - just us little non-US'ns in here.

I hope Moore gets something out of being a dissenting voice. Can't be an easy job in the States right now.

If it's any consolation I doubt he's making even a tiny fraction of what Rupert Murdoch's making as a mouthpiece for the right... (ignorance is apparently universal)

Thanks for letting me know where the map came from.

Another joke via email. Gotta love the net.

NOTICE OF REVOCATION OF INDEPENDENCE TO CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

In light of your recent failure to make the correct decision in electing your President, thus showing you to be unfit to govern yourselves, we hereby give you notice of the revocation of your independence effective as of Monday 8th November 2004.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. Except Utah, which she doesn't much fancy, and is frankly a bit dodgy.

Your new Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Tony Blair M.P. (for the 97.85% of you unaware of the outside world), will appoint a Minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated in twelve months time to determine if any of you noticed.

To aid your transition into a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. All citizens are to look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. While there, check the pronunciation guide for "aluminium" - this may be surprising for you. Generally attempt to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up "vocabulary". Using the same 27 words interspersed with "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable form of communication. NB. Look up "interspersed".

2. There is no such thing as "U.S. English". We will let Microsoft know on your behalf.

3. Learn to distinguish between British and Australian accents. It's not difficult.

4. Hollywood will henceforth be required to occasionally cast Englishmen as good guys.

5. Re-learn your original anthem, "God Save the Queen". Please ensure that you have complied with the first law before attempting this.

6. Stop playing American "football". There is only one kind of "football". What you refer to as "football" is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you aware of a world outside of your borders may have noticed that no one else plays it. Play proper football instead; to start with get the girls to help you - it is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, eventually, be allowed to play rugby, which is similar to American "football", but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full Kevlar body armour like nancies.

7. Declare war on Quebec and France, using nukes if they give you any merde. The 97.85% of you unaware of the outside world should count yourselves lucky - the Russians have never really been bad guys. NB. "Merde" is French for "sh*t".

8. 4th July is no longer a public holiday. 2nd November will be the new national holiday.

9. American cars are hereby banned. They are crap; its for your own good. When we show you German and Japanese cars you'll understand.

10. Please tell us who killed JFK. Its been driving us crazy.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CO-OPERATION.

A letter to the (AGE) editor this morning:

Which moral values?

I was surprised to learn that the verdict of the American people in favour of George Bush was largely based, not on issues such as terrorism, security and the Iraq war, nor on "hip-pocket" considerations, but on "moral values".

Perplexed, I wondered how these could possibly equate with the kind of values we in Australia are at present considering making part of our schools curriculum. Tolerance? Honesty? Integrity? Fairness? Compassion and empathy for others? Were these really on the forefront of voters' minds? Considering the results, it didn't seem to make sense.

Then, of course, the penny dropped. Morals: we're talking of abortion rights, stem cell research and same-sex marriages, all of which are offensive to religious and moral crusaders. They clearly have a huge following of the (self-)righteous.

Compassion and empathy? How could I have been so naive!

Not quite sure what you mean, Deb. That re-electing little Johnny was a vote for "moral values"? I thought it was more about hip pocket concerns, with the morality "debate" coming after the election.

No, no - I mean those in glass houses....

Actually, I think the arrogant anti-americanism in this thread is getting sickening, too.

We'd be outraged if they were saying some of these things to us.

Deb, I've been doing plenty of arrogant anti-Australianism on the Oz election thread in the in interests of fair play.

If they knew as much about our politics as we seem to know about theirs and deigned to comment on it I would be amazed rather than outraged.

I hope I haven't annoyed you - I know what happens when you provoke the bunny!

Oh no, Hinge, not annoyed at all.

I just know I have no hesitation on calling the Anmericans on their arrogance and prejudice - so I feel I ought to call us on it, too.

Just being small doesn't mean we get to be rude without penalty, I think.

Just me.

Deb

This thread is about views of the US election from other countries. And that's pretty much what it's been apart from a debate about our right to criticize the US. I'm as critical (more so, actually) of the uglier aspects of Howard & co. in Oz as I am about US politics. But hey, US politics have so much more impact on the type of world we all get to live in! And I think our comments (on this thread) have been much tamer & more restrained that those of the disillusioned US A2Kers in their threads.

Sure - but I nonetheless wish to note my distaste for the tone of a number of posts here - I think them rude and perversely arrogant - no biggie - just my view. I repeat - I think a number of us would be squawking if Americans said the equivalent about us, or any other country.

I think them funny, though.....blush....

Cannot say I've noticed a lot of anti-american stuff here, lots of anti-Bush but almost 50% of Americans are in agreement with that.

I'm with hingehead and would welcome some good humuored and informed crit from the USA.

Now posted in another thread - and used as an excuse for the ultra-right to post more revolting anti-democrat stuff - really hateful stuff. I do not get this intense hatred stuff - I mean, Howard makes me angry - but not rabid!

http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1007609#1007609

Mebbe they see the "sorry.com" stuff as on the same level?

Is it partisanship that makes me see the sorry stuff as sort of reasonable - and the stuff I just linked to as "lower than a snake's duodenum"?

(To think that tammy should look worthy of affection now!)
