sozobe, do you have any more information on the Deaf contestant? I'm currently writing an article on American Sign Language and it may be interesting to tie it in with how Deaf awareness is making it's way into culture. Note: capital "D" for Deaf is now the PC term.

Eyup. Wink The terminology is actually: Deaf (cap "D") to denote someone who is culturally Deaf, deaf (small "d") to denote someone who cannot hear but who is not part of the Deaf culture (i.e. doesn't sign), and hard of hearing to denote someone who wears hearing aids but relies on residual hearing for communication.

I'm happy to give you as much info as you want on ASL. I'm fluent and my daughter is bi-lingual.

What kind of info are you looking for?

A truly excellent article on Deaf culture and its place in the larger hearing culture is "Deaf is Beautiful" by Andrew Solomon:

Long, but worth it. Almost 10 years old now (wow!) but still very timely.

WHEW!

That was close. Shocked

Nice to see Roger go, though. He was so asking for it. Usually the tribal councils are all angst-ridden, and for this one everyone was just gleeful. Very Happy Feel a little sorry for Dave, but not so much.

I was really worried that Christy would vote for Dave instead of Roger, if she didn't pick up on that the agreement on order before they merged had changed.

Still mad that now she has a bunch of votes if there's a tie situation, but so cool that she's gotten this far! Woo-hoo!

I thought Christy would've won that challenge had they not decided to end it for the spaghetti - she looked totally relaxed on that platform - the other woman was getting tired. Hope Christy thinks twice next time on giving up a challenge she can win. Thats dangerous no matter who you "trust."

I thought tonight's show was one of the funniest I've seen yet. Roger had no clue what was coming and Rob's little Cassey Kasem routine while voting was hilarious.. lol

Thanks for the clarification, sozobe. Right now my brain isn't clear enough to ask any questions, but I did print the article. I'll get back to you, maybe a personal message, if that's ok, don't want to intrude on the survivor dialogue.

It was good to laugh at Rob's dedication upon voting....It was a bit shaky there...I still dont trust Rob and was wondering if he would have voted for Christy...so, funny and happy with his vote.
and I cant believe Roger just jumped right on in after two of the girls <young, athletic, etc> jump off for peanut butter...HELLO..big silly guy...yep, I agree..he basically got what he deserved.

The clip for next week looked kinda scary...whats with the guy with the machete??? YIKES!

Sorry husker!

Larry, yeah, I was thinking that too. I would have been really mad at Deena if Christy was indeed voted off, both for the "deal" and for not giving her the immunity necklace. (Though, in fairness, Deena wouldn't have known the danger Christy was in... but maybe she would, since Rob was presumably privy to that info... hmmm...)

Christy TOTALLY could have won, and I hope she tries harder next time.

And quinn, yeah!? WHAT is up with him? Eek.

I laughed out loud when Roger was voted off. Most enjoyable! What a doofus - he was so convinced he was not in jeopardy ... nice one ladies. However, I would watch that Rob guy, he's a bit of a slippery customer. I think he would knife any of them in the back because his emotions turn on a dime. He feels insecure with the men and now with Deanna gathering up the reins again I think he will not be too happy to take orders from her - she better finesse him good to keep him in order.

I'm sure that Dave and Butch are wondering what happened to their alliance and their secure position. I'll be interested to see how they handle the new situation.

I wish Christie weren't so trusting. She could have won easily.

What happens next week with the guy with the machete? Somebody goes nuts??

We'll see. I think that next week the show moves back to Thursday.

What'd you think?

I liked Dave, actually, more than Matt, anyway. Since Christy was pretty much safe, I wasn't as on pins and needles as usual. I was happy with how long she lasted in the mask-smashing thing (which was kinda cool! Very Happy).

I thought Dave handled the reward challenge thing well -- choosing Deena for negotiation opportunities, and also NOT choosing one of the "hot" girls (Twigs and Sticks -- heh!) since the other one would likely be annoyed.

But still, bye-bye Dave. Ah well.

Was Matt basically fine and they made the most of editing to make him look weird and introduce an element of suspense into what was really a foregone conclusion?

Sozobe, I'm sorry to see Dave leave. He seemed to be a good guy. I don't think that Matt was fine. People's comments suggested that he was sharpening his machete just a bit too much. However, I do think that the producers made the most of that in promoting the show. And they probably spent more time showing it and people's reactions to it than was necessary.

I wish that Rob would get himself voted out. It doesn't seem likely though. I wonder who will be next. Butch? Christie? Matt? If they had any sense, they'd get rid of Deana. She's too powerful. I don't think that will happen.

So what did you guys think of last night? Bye-bye Deena!!

Rob looked as shocked as she did. He's gonna have to do some scrambling.

From the previews for next week, it looks like Christy may be in trouble -- Alex, Rob, Jenna and Heidi seem to be the core group, with Butch, Matt, and Christy on the chopping block. Who knows what will happen, though, and unless immunity gets in the way, hopefully Matt and Butch would go before Christy does.

The captioning went off just before the tribal council started -- it went back on right as they were starting to vote but I missed what was talked about. Can anyone fill me in?

Deena's gone!!

She miscalculated, big time.

Oh boy, it's complicated, I'll see if I can hit the main points:

OK, Deena and Rob had their whole power thing going. They wanted to vote out Matt 'cause he's weird and scary, but realized that he might get immunity since he's about the strongest left. Meanwhile, Rob was sending Matt on these wild goose chases in an attempt to keep Matt beholden to him (Rob) and to "Keep him from killing us." He was saying to Matt that Deena wanted to vote him (Matt) out because Matt was the strongest. Matt was buying this, and talked to Butch about it.

The main group had decided that if Matt got immunity, they would vote Butch off.

Meanwhile, they got tree mail for reward challenge -- bows and arrows and spears and target practice. They had the opportunity to practice. Matt was dead on -- everyone else was super lame and he kept getting bull's-eyes. So Matt told Rob that he (Matt) would purposely tank so that he wasn't seen as so dominating.

In that competition, it came down to Matt vs. Alex. Matt went first, and after getting bull's-eye after bull's-eye, did pretty well, but not great. A little unclear if that was purposeful or not -- presumably yes. So Alex had his chance, and took it, and won.

Reward challenge was the "Amazon Cafe", with coffee and croissants and whatnot. (A lot.) Alex could choose one person to go -- he chose Jenna.

SO -- while they were gone, Deena called a little pow-wow, and said, OK, Alex is way too strong and intimidating. If Matt gets immunity, we're voting out Alex, not Butch.

BAD move.

Heidi was not happy with it, but didn't voice any super strong objections. Alex and Jenna were totally bonding at the cafe. They came back, and Heidi went right to Jenna and told her what was up. Jenna was pissed. Jenna went right to Alex. Alex was pissed. Alex went right to Rob and made a new plan. Bye-bye Deena.

Wait wait wait so Rob knew... hmmm. Anyway.

Christy was not party to this. She and Deena voted for Alex. Everyone else voted for Deena. (Everyone? What about Rob?)

At any rate, Heidi, Jenna, Alex, and Rob seem to be the alliance with power right now.

Oh duh forgot Matt got immunity. It was a disgusting food thing and that was Deena's other miscalculation -- the final was between her and Matt and she didn't even try. On the other hand, I doubt she could have won -- it was a digusting huge live wriggly grub and Matt SWALLOWED it. Whole. (It was like 3 inches long, and 3/4 of an inch thick.) Nas-ty. Anyway, the fact that she didn't even try did not win her any points, as it meant she was that willing to get rid of Alex rather than at least trying to take out Matt.
