A lot of time joining a sport helps trememdously. I speak from experience. I was 180 pounds just 5 years ago, and I was only 5' 2". My father recommended that I try out for sports and I did. I started doing baseball and wrestling and the weight has come off in droves. I'm now 5'10" and 145 pounds. I'm in the best shape of my life and I can't feel better. Another good piece of advice I can give you is not to crash diet, or to take dietary supplements. If you have to do either one, then you're not trying hard enough. Diets are all about mental toughness. It's how far you want to go and how much drive you have to get that weight off. If you just stick to a healthy diet and get plenty of physical activity, you'll see the weight come off in a healthy way.

How 'bout walking? To school, church, band practice, a friend's house, wherever you normally go.

So long as the area is safe and the weather isn't too awful, your folks might appreciate not driving you to some places.

Understood. But the walking is definitely helpful. Hmmm. I am guessing you might need/want to do some strength training, too.

Anyway, I've gotta go get dinner but I'm sure someone will come along with some more suggestions.

Have you ever tried speed walking? You get a much harder workout that way.

Chyeaitscait - Why would your parents object to you getting healthy? According to this website:
http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
you are about 40 lbs overweight. You need to cut your calories and move more. Just turn on some fast music and dance around your room for an hour each day.

Krazehchicka - I'm not sure I understand your question. A thread is a chain of responses to a question or topic. The title of this thread is "teen diets" and therefore that is what we are talking about. What do you find confusing?

i have no idea what to do on this site.. it says reply but im asking a question.
so basically i am 14 and i feel very fat. I am 5'7'' and weigh 138 lbs. My doctor says thats healthy but I still feel like a fat lard. I play alot of sports and walk about 45 mins everyday. I also go to the gym but it seem no matter what i do the weight won't come off. Ive been around 140 for three years and I can't lose a pound. I have a huge stomach and when i play sports i worry my shirts gonna fly up and everyone will see my pot belly. Anyone got any advice??

I kind of doubt that at 5'7" and 138 lbs. that you're fat! It might be that you need to try to be more honest with yourself about your body, you may have an unrealistic assessment of youself. If you really do have a little bit of a tummy, my gosh, what's wrong with that?! You are a woman, you will have a little roundness there because, sorry, ya got a uterus.

If you have given an honest rundown in your post about how much exercise you get, then I think it's far more likely that you have an unrealistic body image than that you're overweight.

Have you talked to anyone else (mom, sister, counselor) who you can trust to be honest (not a friend who might want you to think negatively of yourself!) about how you feel? I don't want to give dieting advice here because I have a strong feeling that you need help with your body image, not encouragement to lose weight.

I guess I am a big fat pig because I am 5 inches shorter than you and weigh only 3 pounds less.

If you want to lose your stomach, you have to cut calories and excercise; burn more than you take in. Crunches and all that will make your abs tight, but if there is a layer of fat over them, you won't see the toned muscles.

There is no way you could have a 'pot' belly at that weight and that height at 14 yrs old. It is simply impossible. Disagree with me all you like, but you are really being too hard on yourself.

I am older than you, 5'2, 111 lbs, and I am FIT. I have defined muscles and I would look/ be sick if I lost much weight at all. I work like a dog to keep my stomach fairly flat!

My point is - you are being unrealistic.

If you are convinced in your mind that you must have a flat, tight stomach with no fat and visible muscle then you must work like a machine to get it. It is not 'natural' for a woman to have defined abs - ESPECIALLY when your body is still growing, which yours IS.

So - Are abs that important to you? If they are, you need to cut out all fat, sugar, extra calories, work out more (there are tonnes of exercises to do besides crunches)..........

and even then you may NEVER develop a flat stomach. It may be in your genetics to have a beautiful little soft spot on your belly.

Why not just enjoy your sport and if you have this extra ambition - work at developing your athletic performance? That's just my thoughts.

I really don't know why this thread keeps going. Unless there's anymore specific advice, there's no reason to respond to another "I'm 5'2 140lbs am I fat?" question.

eat unprocessed food. Food you have to peel or clean or cook before you eat it. Vegetables and Fruit. Ask your mum to not buy "pick up and eat" type stuff like cookies. Carry an apple in your handbag for when your friends eat rubbish. Then you can have something too.
When you do have something to eat at home use a plate knife and fork sit down cut up your food or peel it. dont eat out at takeaways such as Maccas or similar Go home to eat. eat three meals healthy sit down meals a day.

Do you know the food pyramid? find out about it if you dont.

Excercise at least 3 times per week for an hour each time. Walk places dont drive or ride. Swim, ride a bike go to gym or dance classes. I found it a little funny (ha ha funny) when you said you want to get fit for sports cause it is the sports that will help you lose those couple of pounds you feel you have.

Its not wrong to want to look nice however just dont overfocus on the way you look. Find other interests.
what else are you interested in?

thanx for the advice everyone. The thing is that I play alot of sports and most of the girls are in really good shape and im the heaviest on my team. It kinda makes me feel out of place. They all are the perfect size, and im not. I play vball obviously and in that you have to jump- alot and im really self-concious about my stomach. I know i exaggerated but thats the way i talk. And i want to make the teams in high school and i know for a fact that alot of the coaches at the school i am going to want you to be in like perfect condition if ur going to be on the team. I am frustrated out of my mind. Im used to being good at alot of things and when i was younger, being bigger didnt bother me, i really liked it, but now that im getting to high school, it seems like it means everything.
