@layman,
There's a danger in self-confirming what constitutes "reasonable people."

Nobody has said that violent jihadism isn't a problem. What's nonsense is thinking that Trump's actions will do anything to solve that problem. They won't they will exacerbate it. Jihadis are constantly saying that America isn't anti Jihad, it's anti Muslim, all Muslims. Trump is making their argument for them.

If you were an intelligence officer in a Muslim country and you heard a whisper about a terrorist plot in America you'd be far less likely to let your American counterparts know.

All Trump has said is that in view of the evident intent of people to kill us, we need to vet very carefully the people who are seeking to enter our country and that there will be a three month suspension of immigration from terrorist hot spots while we gear up. It's only common sense.

For example, let's take the Afghanis. Very few people in the world have ever believed that when someone attacks your cities and murders thousands of your citizens, as in 9/11, you don't have the right to retaliate.

yes. the Afghanis. Terrific example.

Quote:
First, according to international law as codified in the UN Charter, disputes are to be brought to the UN Security Council, which alone may authorize the use of force. Without this authorization, any military activity against another country is illegal.

Second, there are two exceptions: One is that, if your nation has been subjected to an armed attack by another nation, you may respond militarily in self-defense. This condition was not fulfilled by the 9/11 attacks, however, because they were not carried out by another nation: Afghanistan did not attack the United States. Indeed, the 19 men charged with the crime were not Afghans.

I think Afghanistan / Afghanis are right to hold a grudge against America - or as you have suggested - to retaliate. Afghanistan was attacked by America without cause.

I'm astounded that I even have to go through this, but on September 11, 2001, Osama bin Laden's agents attacked the US and murdered about 3,000 people in our cities. We knew that he was being given sanctuary and support by the Taliban in Afghanistan. We asked numerous times for them to extradite him to stand trial for the murder of thousands of our citizens and they said no. That seems kind of like cause to me. Virtually no one in the world believes that when someone attacks you in your cities and kills thousands of your citizens that you don't have the right to retaliate.

@Brandon9000,
There's already vetting going on; long before Trump ordered it.

great explanation of why the Afghanis should be attacking America. They didn't and won't but they really should - based on your rationale.

The Afghanis were the ones who attacked us. Your denial of this is just as repugnant as Holocaust Denial. You should be ashamed.

But you do remind me why Americans shouldn't care when there's collateral damage and our thermobaric warheads cook a bunch of children.

@Brandon9000,
It's the exact opposite of common sense, unless you want to alienate moderate Muslims, have another terrorist atrocity and use it as an excuse to clamp down even more on people's freedoms. Then it makes perfect sense.

@McGentrix,
Quote:
Is the US taking in large numbers of Syrian refugees?

Despite fears that an influx of Syrian refugees would overrun the country, so far, the US has welcomed just a fraction of the millions of refugees who have fled Syria. Since 2012, the US has accepted 2,174 Syrian refugees – roughly 0.0007% of America’s total population.
The refugees the US takes in are among the most vulnerable in the Syrian conflict: many are women and their children, while others are religious minorities and victims of violence or torture.
Obama has committed to taking 10,000 Syrian refugees in the coming year, five times the number the US has taken in the past four years. Were the country to take in an additional 10,000 Syrians, they would still only represent approximately 0.004% of its existing population. This ratio stands in marked contrast with the much poorer and much smaller countries bearing the biggest burden of the Syrian refugee crisis.

Al Qaeda under Osama bin Laden attacked America in 2001 and killed 3,000 citizens, mostly civilians. This is more than sufficient justification for us to retaliate against his sponsors in Afghanistan.
