May I suggest to the originator of this forum to revise the title, and add the dates of this Get Together?

Beth, It may be a little out of the way but the Ashland/Bayfield area is gorgeous. The Apostle Islands are very interesting. Lots of lighthouses and quaint little towns. You can then just swing south onto Interstate 39.

Soz, I think the restaurants you are talking about on State are Himal Chuli and Kabul Afghanistan & Meditaranian. Right? I've heard they are both good, but haven't tried them.

Hee hee!

I used to work right next door to that place. It's where I bought my cheesehead. The bad-smellin' cheesehead that disappeared, but... It's WAY touristy. The real cheese is at the farmer's market, and I'll tell you the best ones. I just double-checked and my friend's brother's cheese place is still at the farmer's market -- their havarti with dill is to die for.

Swimpy, I think I love you! Oh, that's been taken. Still!! Yep, Himal Chuli is the Nepalese place... yum. (To give credit where credit is due, patiodog filled me in, too.) A small momo (momo??) plate and a mango lassi was a staple of my college diet.

Too bad about Pasqual's.

And yup, Kabul. That's good too.

I really oughtta ask E.G. for suggestions. He was in charge of seminars at one point, which meant taking a bunch of physicists out for dinner. I bet he knows some good places. (I think they went to Kabul a lot.)

Porta Bella is the "fancy" Italian restaurant for like first dates, but isn't actually that great.

hey, we have a Kabul in Sunnyvale, CA, too! It's a great restaurant, and it's only about a mile from where we live. We always order the elephant ears for dessert. Wink

Mostly woods. Seriously, though, I'll come up with a list for ya ... do you have your route down to major highways yet?

Beth, If you're in the area, you really should check out Door County. Lots of interesting little towns like Fish Creek, Egg Harbor, etc. Quite beautiful in the spring when the cherry trees are blossoming, but any time of the year is nice. (with the possible exception of winter, but I've never been there in the wintertime. Here's some info...

Door County

Also, speaking of Madison, isn't that where Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner took place? Hell of a book. Might as well read that as you're traveling.

One thought just struck me, ehBeth ... you'll be travellin' through here (Upper Peninsula/Northern Wisconsin) at pretty close to the peak of Fall Color (trees here are already starting to turn). You're gonna be awestruck by that, fer sure.

Door County is nice. A bit touristy, but some really gorgeous stuff.

There's the Wisconsin Dells, too -- also touristy, also beautiful. Some good uber-touristy stuff, along the lines of Wall Drug. You know, so touristy that it's cool.

Hayward/Cable area in Northern Wisc is nice, in a touristy sorta way, too. I like The Dells ... we go to Lake Delton and to Mirror Lake a lot.
Oh, and Door County ... sorta reminiscent of New England, to my mind. Very nice.

Crap. I thought "hmm, that seems to be about when Homecoming is", and sure enough...

That's Homecoming weekend. The place will be swamped. Hotel rooms will likely be somewhat limited. Can probably do it anyway, but FYI.

(For me, on the other hand, could be really cool to do to the Badgers game. Hmm. Homecoming is for us Alumni, after all.)

True about color! That'll be great.
