Bluephies looks good (same corporate website). It's got meatloaf, so we know Setanta would like it.

Any hmmmm real diner kinda places there. Or well-lit pool-halls?

Dairyland Cheeseburger . . . 6.09
7 ozs of ground beef, grilled medium-well and served on a freshly baked bun. Our #1 seller is topped with a slab of melted Wisconsin Cheddar. Served with your choice of French fries or cole slaw. Waffle fries may be substituted for an additional .75

i wanna try Wisconsin Cheddar - and hear those funny accents in person

Ya gotta try http://www.leinie.com/art/taproom/Northwoods/NW_bottle_glass.jpg Leinie's Northwoods, too! Course, http://www.sprecherbrewery.com/imgjpeg/rootbeer.jpg Sprecher's Rootbeer is great if you're more inclined that way.

real rootbeer?

i love trying rootbeers from different places.

i wonder if i could get a good rootbeer float out there? isn't wisconsin the dairy state, or the apple state or something?

the only reason i know anything about wisconsin is perfect strangers - cousin larry was larry appleton, from appleton, wisconsin - and he missed home. remember him - he lived in chicago with his cousin, balki bartakimus (sp?) i had a friend who lived a block from where their apartment was supposed to be in chicago

Since I'm usually a daytripper to Madison, I only know the lunch grub places. Ella's Deli on State Street is gone bye bye. The East side location is a zoo. We also like State Street Brats, but again it's a noisy place and kinda dark too. The red brats are magnifico, though. Bluephies had good food and prolly enough room if it's not too busy.

Here's a link to browse all the local eating establishments. http://www.thedailypage.com/going-out/eats/

There are several places on Willy St. that have been getting some buzz, but I don't have any personal knowledge. One is called theThe Weary Traveler

patiodog, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to try all the cool places and report back.

Yup, real, small-batch Rootbeer, made with Wisconsin honey, instead of sugar, BTW. And believe me, you can get a great rootbeer float just about anywhere in Wisconsin. It IS The Dairy State (The National Milk Production Board has been headquartered in Eau Claire for a century and a half)

Um, I've been to the Weary Traveller. Not bad, kinda quiet and staid for its kind, tasty but pretty insubstantial eats.

My severance check might arrive tomorrow, though, so I'll give it a shot, eh. (Wondering about Friday night busy-ness 'round here.)

Oh, and, Timber, I've got my Leinie's longneck lager within arm's reach. 11 bucks for a case. I could live here.

Friday's are gonna be pretty busy just about anywhere in Wisconsin ... Friday Fish Fry is an institution at everything from corner pubs to trendy-touristy restaurants ... No biggie; they'll just have to deal with us.

BLUEPHIES!!

Yes yes Bluephies.

Was the location of a standing date for girl talk. It's not fantastic food, but it's good enough and has a wide selection.

I'll keep thinking.

There is the SW place that is across from both Blue Plate (West side) and Bluephies (East side) but I can't remember the name of it for the life of me... that's pretty good. There's the Nepalese place I mentioned to patiodog that I'd LOVE to go to for food (and will, for lunch with a friend probably), but is too tiny. There's the Rathskellar/Terrace, but inside is NOISY and outside is dependant on weather.

It seems like most of my favorite places are tiny... I'd LOVE to go to Sophia's, but they have like 3 tables. LITTLE tables.

Will keep thinking.

The thing about Friday night busy-ness is that it's a college town. So it's Thursday night busy-ness, too (usually few or no classes on Fridays), Friday night busy-ness, Saturday night busy-ness, and Tuesdays for some reason seemed to have a lot of action. It's just busy, or not, pretty much all the time.

If we don't meet on the Terrace, though, I will definitely be getting some Babcock Hall ice cream and chilling out at some point, though, and will welcome company.

Josie's!!!

Kinda smallish, though, too. Hmmm.

Maybe that's why there are so blessed many of 'em. They're all teeny.

Patiodog, there are (were) two Middle Eastern-type places on State near the campus, across the street from each other, one nice-ish (white tablecloths) and the other more informal. If you happen to see them, can you remind me what the heck they're called?

There's always Sunporch on University. My very very favorite restaurant ever was upstairs Sunprint on State -- bye-bye now.

(I'll finally edit instead of posting AGAIN...)

If you can't tell, I'm kind of taking a mental walk along State St. It's nice. I'm so thrilled about going back. I haven't been there once since I moved 6 years ago, and not at all since I moved here (Chi-town), even though a specific selling point was proximity to Madison.

Here's the motherlode (from Swimp's link):

PASQUAL's is what I was trying to remember, the SW place. Pretty good!

I think Bluephies is the best bet so far for food + space.

I was talking to Setanta about this last night. Apparently, I didn't really understand where the UP was (or maybe i just thought i could cut through the lake? ) So it seems that we will be driving all the way around Lake Michigan during the week on our way to Madison. Anyone got any must-see's/ must-do's/must sample's from Detroit to the Soo to Green Bay to Madison?

Wait -- which way are you going around the lake? Green Bay's a little out of he way if you're coming 'round the south end -- but, then, Chicago's down there, and if you were going that way, you'd've mentioned that little burg, I suppose. (Haven't seen aught of Chicago except for two spectacular traffic jams since last March -- but that is neither here nor there...)

Will have to walk home from my classes tomorrow to scope things out. My cousin's in Milwaukee for a business thingie next week and will be taking my poor ass to dinner, so maybe I'll use that as a little test.

(der. UP as in where the yoopers live. what am I, estupido?)

Sozobe, Pasqual's on Atwood is closed. Don't know what's in there now.
