Good thing I didn't book this place then.

The cabin does not have modern bathroom facilities or electricity. An outdoor vault toilet is located behind the cabin and the water source is a hand pump in the front of the cabin.

You'd love it around Timberland, Set; some of the roads are paved, most of the homes have indoor plumbing, and there's phone and electric nearly everywhere. We're real into the finer things fer sure.
Why, there's even been talk recently about lookin' into regular garbage pickup, but it'll likely be a while before the politics of it get sorted out. Still, we're gonna have ta do somethin' pretty soon, since we can't afford to bring the town dump into compliance with the upcoming regulations. Pity, really; the old place has been real popular with the bears and 'coons for over a hundred years. Dunno what they're gonna do now.

We use to go down to the dump an' shoot rats . . . great way for idle boys to while away a Sattiday afternoon . . . crucial, too, since any idle child in the sight of my grandmother was immediately put to hard labor . . .

I don't understand why it's called a swamp cooler. Swamps aren't cool. Guess it's for cooling swamps -- but in that case, how come I'm here in marsh country pulling a swamp cooler out of the window?

Damn.

Um, you dog folks -- are you looking for someone to look after your mutts overnight or just for the evening? 'Cause the kennel we use is prolly competitively priced with the cost of getting someone to take direct care of 'em, and our spoiled dogs like the place. (Neighbors downstairs have a dog and a need for money, but they've been having screaming fights every morning and night, and I'm not entirely sure how long they're likely to be living down there...)

I was hoping to find an evening dog-care but an overnight place would be all right. I'm saving enough by bringing them along (a kennel for two dogs for 9 nights here would have run me over $1000.00 Shocked ) that I could afford at least one overnight for them in Madison.

Setanta has threatened to stay with the dogs instead of coming out with us - so I've got to get something sorted!

oh dear. the swamp coolers. I've got to do something about mine. setanta probably won't be here until November, so i've got to wrestle them out myself. i'm not looking forward to it. at all.

Less than two weeks to go, folks! I forgot to tell you all that I was in Madison last week and had lunch at the Great Dane. The food and the beer were pretty good. The place is smaller that I expected. I asked the waitress if a group of about 10 would be a problem on a Friday night. She said if we come early, like before 5 pm, no problem but any later and the wait could be an hour.

I'm thinking that is what we can expect no matter where we go. Homecoming festivities will only add to the wait. Sooooo...We should prolly figure out what to do while we wait.

I'm doin' my trip laundry now.
Setanta flies in here next Friday, and we head out on the road a week from today. We should almost be in Michigan a week from now!

I've already picked up some U.S. cash from the cash machine (I love those things). Went to Spadina to pick up some teenyteenyteeny trinkets. I am ready. Well, not ready - I don't know where the little cooler is - I need to buy a small kettle or coffee-maker - I can't decide which travel crate to bring for the dogs - do I take one or two? O.K., I'm not ready, but I feel ready.

Two weeks from today, we'll be leaving Madison on our way back for Cleo's graduation on Sunday afternoon. Waahhhhhhhhh, I'm not ready for the trip to be over.

Two weeks! Gosh.

I'm HOPING that the homecoming crowd will be more Terrace-ish, since that is where the events are that night.

Swimpy, did you get a chance to ask her about homecoming weekend vs. a miscellaneous Friday?

No, I didn't, frankly I didn't even think of it at the time.

Beth, how can your trip be over before it's begun?

In theory, Setanta is charging the batteries on his digital camera right now - wanna have both of those cameras primed and ready for action. http://images.google.ca/images?q=tbn:n72nmc9xepAC:www.rcsailing.gr/images/web/camera-flash_.gif

I really am very excited about visiting Hiawatha National Forest. I love Longfellow - have a six-foot long print of Hiawatha from 1900 in the living room - yadda yadda - all those lighthouseshttp://www.northernmichigan.com/public/lighthouses/LakeMichigan/lakemichiganmainpage/lakemichiganmap.jpg to see ... click - the autumn leaves - yadda yadda - i found out there are some good shoe outlets along the route - yadda yadda - they have adult clothes at OshKosh B'Gosh - yadda yadda!

We're crossing over at Port Huron and then heading up to the Michigan Upper Peninsula. If you haven't heard  , we'll be visiting Hiawatha National Forest for a couple of days, and then heading into Wisconsin - running along the edge of Lake Michigan to Green Bay - staying there for a couple of nights - doing at least one day trip up to Door County - then it's on to Madison on Thursday!

Once we get to Madison, I hope to head over to the House of Wisconsin Cheese and order a nice grilled cheese with soup. Take-out, of course. Gotta consider the dogs.
