Timber - we (Setanta and meeeeee) will be in Madison on Thursday night as well. Perhaps we could join you in the scouting.

I was NOT planning to drive through Chicago to the UP and then Madison. Those were 2 different route options - 1 was through Chicago to Madison, the other was to the UP then Madison and then back through Chicago. Sheesh. The problem had to do with Sault Ste. Marie. I want to stay as far from that stinky town as possible. That's when I was trying to figure out if I could cut through the lake to get over to Green Bay.

I have found a bunch of sites for fish fries - some around Green Bay, in fact, for Wednesday night. As long as I get one or two of those in, I'll be happy. Madison has a ton of Friday night fish fries - the one at the Ladies Auxiliary to the Legion looks interesting - maybe not family friendly though. Or maybe your legions are different than ours.

Many families get started in the American Legion. Not sure about the ladies auxiliary, though, and if they've got all the necessary equipment for that sort of thing.

Still dunno 'bout JoJo (Mrs. Timber) ... she's a solid maybe at best. Somebody's gotta care for the critters (a bunch more involved than just feedin'and walkin' a pet or two a couple times a day Rolling Eyes ), and the folks who usually cover that for us have obligations that weekend. We're hopeful, though.

I likes fish, but not enough to be willin' ta drive from the Indiana dunes straight through to Green Bay . . . tends to git kinda wet on that route . . .

I'm definitely up fer fish fries . . . any place, any time . . .

This looks like MY fish fry place in Green Bay. Gotta try this.

http://www.classicwisconsin.com/fishfrys/maric.htm

Quote:
Fish and fish only on Wednesdays and Fridays, no other food is provided except for Booyah on Saturdays. (See, this place is Heaven.) Perch is the plate of choice, but smelt (in season), chub, lawyers, whitefish, catfish, and blue gill are on the menu too. Enough fish for yew hey?

Maricque's menu is a relative term here -- a dog-eared table tent is more accurate. The perch is piled on paper plates in single, double, or triple portions, with or without bones, and a thick slice of onion and buttered rye bread on the side. The perch is cooked so delicately that you can actually savor …perch, unlike places where fish is deep-fried into chunks of crud. And Maricque's veterans know that bone-in perch is even more succulent than the boned, but you have master the art of peeling the fillets from the skeleton. The expert fish-slinging waitresses can show you, honey.

What the heck is a fried lawyer?

soz's mention of it last week is what prompted me to make my reservation. It also made absolutely sure that we would be going. I'm not backing out of something I have a room booked for!

I made my reservations!!

Tip -- it seems like the price doubles if you check in on a Friday or Saturday vs. a Thursday or earlier.

i wonder if that's how they plan to dissuade homecoming fest'ers from staying there?

in any case, hooray hooray hooray! i wonder if we can arrange to be at the same end together - we can make the request once we know how many of us will be at the same place.

Oooh!

Sozlet and Bailey and Cleo playing together!!

She might be scared of them, though. She likes boa constrictors, she likes iguanas, she likes sloths (pet all three recently, loved 'em), but dogs, especially little fast-moving dogs, set her on edge. We'll see.

Oh I just remembered that my friend wrote back re: Madison restaurants and another friend did too (he forwarded my email to her), so lemme find those and cut and paste.

Bailey is a very good dog with small humans. Cleo prefers to keep her distance initially - which is good. Neither of them is usually too bouncity when meeting new people - which is nice for small, slightly uncomfortable people. We are trying to figure out whether we can arrange doggie day care for Friday night. The rest of the trip should be fine - they both handled 8 and 10 hour drives when I went to the Catskills to visit with longdog, valdo, Peace and Love, piffka, and Diane last year.

Restaurant emails:

Quote:
You're going to laugh, but the only restaurant I can think of that fits your bill is Imperial Gardens, out on Univ. Ave. All my other favorites are small (Saz), or sort of dark and cozy (Kabul, the Indian place), or very loud (Great Dane).

But I did forward your email ... and she said she had several suggestions for you, so expect to hear from her soon.

Here are some ideas:

Sa Bai Thong on Odana. Their restaurant on University Avenue is too crowded. They have a lot more room at the Odana restaurant.

Buraka on State Street -- African food (they have a food cart on Library Mall, too). They're now in the lower level below Husnus. They have a large room sort of in the back that could probably be arranged to suit you. I have hardly ever seen anyone in there.

Casa de Lara has a new location off Fish Hatchery Road south of the Beltline. It's a huge place with good lighting.

The Great Dane (also downtown) also has a new location off Fish Hatchery Road south of the Beltline. It's near Casa de Lara. (I don't know how quiet this would be.)

Do any of these suit? You might also try looking at the Isthmus' restaurant guide located at http://www.thedailypage.com/going-out/eats/
Madison Magazine also has a restaurant guide : http://www.madisonmagazine.com/diningguide/

Let me know if I can be of more help!

Of those, Buraka sounds good to me... I used to eat from their food cart alllllllll the time.

I have a State St. bias, if it's at all practical. (But am flexible.)

I asked for a place that would comfortably seat 6-10 people, fairly light (me), and not too loud (Setanta.) We can adjust any of those, though.

This is just FYI, will follow up with the second one now. I'll give her more info.

I've been to Kabul, and it's not that dark. I like that place, too. The Saz is GREAT (and kinda appropriate, name-wise Razz) but it's smaller and more of a take-out type place.

Sorry I didn't get back to you last night, but my internet was out. I HATE that! I got my room, didn't get the deal that Beth got though. I had read you say that it was homecoming, but for some reason it didn't register as you need to book a room NOW!" I'm staying elsewhere but nearby.

Sozobe, I am partial to State St., too. It IS Madison to me. Any of those places sound fine. Casual, though, is the name of my tune.
